Hey guys, which synthetic motor oil permits easy starts at -40C? I live in Edmonton,Alberta where it gets brutally cold in the winter. In 2009 we were the second coldest place on earth.

I don't know of any ratings for -40C. However, Redline 0W20 and 0W30 is pourable to -60C. I don't know the limit at which it is pumpable.

Try to find some Mobil 1 AFE 0w20. It is SUPPOSED to be available up here now. It has an incredible low temp MRV.

-40C=-40F. Block heater would be necessary IMO, but also M1 0-20 would be my choice. welcome Canada

Pffffffffft. My 99 chev with a 5.3 and 300000 kms started just fine this morning with pyb. It was -47 with wind and my truck is not sheltered. It wasn't plugged in either. 5w-30. And actually it has started fine all this week and we have seen temps down to -49 with wind. The seat was so cold it the cushion was solid. Op. I live in Saskatchewan. It is unreal cold here. Any 0w or 5w will work

40 weight oil of any rating is out of the question in that engine in this climate. Most synthetic 5w-20 or 0w-20 oils should work well. It's hard to give a specific because I'm just not sure what you can get. If it were me I'd probably be looking at Mobil1 or Toyota 0w-20.

In another thread, we were informed that at such temperatures the 0w is more important than the 40 so I don't know if a 5w20 is better than a 0w30/40. All oils have info on their pourability at -40c.

What was the temp without the wind chill? Wind chill does not apply to vehicles or other inanimate objects.

An engine doesn't feel the wind, so what was the ACTUAL temperature, without the windchill factored in?

Going by the weather network, it looks like the coldest it got was -32C and that was at 5:00AM Friday morning.

If the temperature is 35F and the wind chill is 20F, will water freeze? Of course not. Water freezes at 32F. Wind chill doesn't mean squat.

Lol and here I am worrying about start up wear for my cars in a garage in California
