I have a 02'Subaru outback 2.5 EJ25 with a recently installed new short block.

Wondering which particular full synthetic Castrol, M1 or Rotella T6 would be best for that engine?

Castrol Edge Titanium. Titanium is a good anti wear additive not used in many motor oils.
Be sure you use the proper oil filter for your Subaru. Some after market oil filters don't have the correct Subaru bypass setting.

Which weight of the Edge Titanium would be appropriate for my application?

I do not see a Castrol Edge Titanium listed in a 0W40 weight. The Only Edge 0W40 I see is the other Castrol Edge in the black bottle not the Titanium product.

What about the 0 weight oils? Is there any advantage to them?

0W is good for startup.

All three are solid, Edge 0w-40 is the German made product that uses a high percentage of group 4 (PAO) in it. I'd put Edge and M1 0w-40 as interchangeable #1 and Rotella T6 #2.

I agree

Is the 40 weight o.k. to use year round in the Suby even though the spec calls for 30 weight?

Don't worry about that. I believe it's in the process of switching, but we lag at times here, so I never know. The sheets would indicate it will be gold bottle sooner or later. The real issue is what's in the bottle, not the bottle itself. It will be Castrol 0w-40 A3/B4. And, it would be suitable, along with Rotella T6, or several other options.

Absolutely. Plenty of people have used 40 grades in Subarus over the years, and some years even called for the grade. A 0w-40 would be a suitable year round choice. It'll be fantastic in any winter conditions you'll ever face and will be just as suitable in the summer.
