A few years ago, barely a thread would go by without mentioning AutoRX clean and rinse phases, the mythic qualities of German Castrol, and the cheerleading for conventional Havoline motor oil. But I never remember seeing any threads about how or why these products fell out of favor. Is this just typical fad-like phases of product loyalty, or was there some juicy oil industry scandal that rocked the stalwarts from their lofty pedestals? These days it seems to be MMO and PP. Did stuff just get better and the old darlings surpassed?

Auto-Rx - some crowd beat down on Frank in absentia- been replaced with MMO filling in the void.

GC- It's got its own section ..and it's almost (I think) a decade of old news.

Havoline - Deposit Shield nearly doubled the price.

Nowadays MMO, PENNZ Plat, Pennz YB are the current forum darlings. Havoline became Havoline DS and went upscale(More $ ).

Also Motorcraft 5w-20 in 5 qt jugs for $11-12 at WM makes it a favorite.

MMO is about 10% of the price of ARX too.

I guess this all makes sense. Nothing is forever. Today's prom king can be tomorrow's trailer trash. If anyone has seen any rational comparisons of MMO results to ARX results, I'd be very interested.

The WM here in town has the 5 qt jugs for 11.50. I dont think that is too bad. Did it used to be real cheap or something.

Havoline also fell out of favour because the move to DS removed about 2/3's of the moly from the formulation. A lot of folks (including me) saw that a vary negative move.....

Havoline 5qt jugs used to be around $5.77 earlier this decade.

ToyotanSaturn- you saw jugs of Havoline at $5.77 in the last month or so? (I kid, I kid... I knew what you meant)

It looks like these products are still popular on BITOG. Check the European oil, UOA, and oil additive sections if you want more info.

Purolator has replace Hastings. While neither used to be as good as AC, at least Purolator isn't more expensive. AC's may still be better, but haven't seen a PF1177 in years.

Havy DS...is $11.50 for 5qt jug at my local walmart so since you stated it doubled, did it use to run about $6 for a 5qt jug?

IN another lifetime,,mid 60s, I remember paying about 50cents a qt for Havoline, so todays prices arent that far out of line, and Havoline was a big time oil really popular, I used it then and never any sludge, or junk on lifters, valve cover area was clean
