In my part of the world when I was a kid, Halloween was for kids to dress up in SCARY costumes. It seems everyone was a skeleton, a devil, Frankenstein, a wolfman, etc. Now it has become a costume party for adults who dress up as such scary things as policemen, nurses, French maids, tootsie rolls, etc. Even kid's costumes aren't traditional Halloween anymore...Princesses, Ninja Turtles, Sponge Bob, etc. I was wondering this morning when the "scary day" turned into "costume ball day". Any thoughts?

I would rather see the above costumes over a scary one any day.

I don't mind them, good eye candy me thinks. Halloween around here is all but dead. As a kid growing up in north Jersey I remember seeing the streets PACKED with kids and parents going around. Now I see maybe a few groups of kids/parents and thats it. Most stop after 7pm and its desolate out there.

I'd say All Hallows got to be a costume holiday in the early to mid-80s, when a lot of baby boomers hit their thirties and also had some money to spend on nice costumes. Remember how restaurants like Bennigan's would often have Halloween parties?

Halloween became a day for parties not for roaming. I believe that pedophiles are responsible for this phenomena.

It was the same with diapers in the supermarket. By the time we were on our second, both sides of the aisle ..full length were dedicated to infant/toddler stuff. It will take those children having their own kids to have their own (somewhat smaller) baby boom.

halloween can just go away AFAIC, it's a pointless 'holiday' staying around to sell candy and chinese costumes.
Well, guess the only thing left to say now is, it celebrates a pagan ritual so we should forget all about it.
I think it chanaged when the real world started resembling the make believe. With the horrors that have started to pop up in the world now on a semi-regular basis, it is probably good that we are gravitating to fun, frivolous things at times.
I've never been to an adult party. But by the looks of the ads I've been receiving in the mail for the past several weeks -- and Buster's post -- I need to start.
Our neighborhood is usually pretty busy. Some kids look scary. Most are in "cute" costumes. Our girls have always been "cute" characters (Princesses, Strawberry Shortcake, etc.). Girls aren't much into being freaky/scary -- except for the truly freaky ones.

Reminds me of a story my wife told me (I did not know her at that time):
She made a vampire costume for one of her daughter and did also her make up (she is really good at it). It was so realistic, when she saw herself in the mirror, she got afraid and cried until my wife removes the make up.
Now, they only wear nice homemade costumes (at least they do them themselves, that is their fun... with the candies): My toddler will be Pinker Bell this year and one of my step daughter will be again a candy (at least a different one).
And this year, we got a new puppy (yorkshire) and I am so happy they followed my idea: It will be a hotdog!
Should be fun as my toddler is old enough to trick or treat with no help from her two big sisters.
