Like for example, a 1995 Jaguar XJ12 that cost $70,000 new that you bought for $5,000 in 2010. List 1) Year make and model and how much it went for new. And 2) The year you bought, for how much, and from whom, dealer, private, auction. And no wise guys replying about the '65 Impala they bought in 1975 for $50. Make it a minimum of $50,000 new cost.

I guess my 1983 Mercedes 300D that listed for $32000 that I got for $800 in 2015 from a private party in North Carolina doesn't count. It was the price of five Ford Fairmonts. Carry on!

I bought a 2002 Lexus LS430 in 2013 for $10k. The new car sticker that was in glove compartment was $72k (Mfg Suggested Retail). One of the best cars I have ever owned, fabulous. Purchased from small car lot, 76k miles, one owner.

We've had four MBs and a couple of BMWs for which we paid a fraction of their price new. Depreciation is your friend on higher-end cars. Check out the potential problems before buying, but if you get a decent example cheaply enough that doesn't really matter much.

2007 LS460, bought used in 2012 with 72,000 miles for $22,000. Sticker price was $74,000. Great car. Drove like a dream. Got a little expensive to own as the miles piled on - traded it in with 178,000 miles on her - was starting to use a good bit of oil but still ran excellent. Not one single check engine light in all those miles. Nothing. All that technology in that car and not once did I have one single electrical problem.

Bought a 1996 Oldsmobile Aurora (MSRP $35-42ish back then) in Jan 2003 for $3800 with 91,0000 on it from an Acura dealer Dealer wanted 7k but AC wouldn't work when we went for a test drive and by closing the GM just wanted it gone for the cars auction value so I rolled the dice. A/C took a charge once and worked another year or so before the compressor seized then I just lived without it. Drove the car till 160k miles and traded it in late 2005 when the head-gasket began to fail and still got near $2k.

2008 Mercedes E-350, MSRP was $65,260. Had almost 12k in options. Got it in 2014 with less than 50k for $18,500. Now probably worth around 6-7k. So that's about 2k worth of depreciation a year. Got it at a used car dealer. I was looking for one that was loaded. I used cargurus and basically bought it 3 days after it was listed. Incidentally if you want the original window sticker you can get it here but it costs $8. Anyone know of a free one? monroneylabels.com

Have you a plan for this data? My 2007 Volvo listed for 36K I think. Bought near you (Martin in Bethesda-no more new car dealerships in the District) on this day in 2016 w/69K for 10 grand. This was after a 2 year search. The car came with new tires, battery and a rich maintenance / repair history. I was ready to buy but not itching. Funny note: Driving it home the day after Christmas from D.C. was a constant (thank God) 45 mph. The car bettered 29 mpg. With "regular highway" driving over the ensuing 3 years I cannot do better than 27-28.

Bought a two year old Mercury with 10K on the odometer for half price. It still had some warranty left. Bought a 7 year old Mercedes E320 cabriolet (38K miles) for $28K, original sticker around $85K.

Interesting questions. In 1997, I purchased a 1991 Audi V8 5-speed for $17,000. It sold new in 1991 for $64,000 ($121,000 inflation-adjusted) My adjusted purchase price would be $27,000 (1997 dollars in 2019 dollars). It was mint/perfect in all respects, no damage or noticeable wear, low miles. The 5-speed versions brought/bring big dollars vs. the slushboxes. So a six-year old $120,000 car for $27,000. The car was worth every penny and is still in the "fleet."

Hm, I've actually always looked this up on the fancy car's I've owned. Here's the top few: 2013 Chevrolet Volt: MSRP $42k, paid $8,500 with 124k on it in 2016. <--- That's my winner. 2003 Cadillac Seville STS: MSRP $49k, mine had the nav, sport pack so call it $53k. Paid $1,400 with 120k in 2018. 1999 Cadillac Seville STS, same MSRP, paid $1,200 with 140k in like 2009.
