Finally getting around to installing the transmission cooler that's been in my garage for a few months. I'm also going to install an inline spin on filter. What's the largest filter I can use? I haven't bought the filter adapter yet, so it can be either Ford or Chevy size threads...

The PermaCool kit I used used a large Ford filter, I believe AC PF2 or equivalent, an easier filter to find and go see the size of would be the Fram PH8A, but I am sure you know better than to use one

.

I'm installing one that uses a PH8A.
BIGGIE size it,if you got the room.
Double size filters are, Baldwin BT251 ,Wix 51773.
Any bigger and you're talkin city bus filters!

The availability of a FL-1A/PH8A would be an advantage.
I haven't bought any "monster size" filters, but doesn't the cost get rather high and ready availability poor?
Being that it's an ATF filter. it really shouldn't need to be changed but maybe once a year, if that.
I'd change a $2 filter twice as often as I would a $6 filter.

I was thinking more along the lines of a ~2 quart filter.

Availability isn't really much of an issue, because if I need to change it and a giant filter isn't available, a smaller filter will work.

Where are you going to locate the filter?
If it's exposed to the road, the larger filter would more likely have a greater chance of being damaged by road debris etc.

I'm not sure what part of Orygun you're in, but you might consider a "smaller" filter for Winter. That would allow the transmission fluid to get up to temperature a little quicker (or less slowly).
Summer you could go to the BIG one for the added oil capacity and slight additional cooling from the larger "can" area.

I'm going to put the filter behind the radiator...so it will be well protected. I don't think over cooling will be much of a problem since I'm keeping the stock "cooler", which is more of a heater. I'm near portland, so it doesn't get that cold around here.

That's a GMC bus filter !
IMO using that filter on a car is overkill. It'll take a lot of dirt before that baby clogs.

Clogging isn't the issue. I want it to add capacity...and if I can find a 1-2 quart filter, that is almost 25% more ATF! And I'll only have to change it about every 50k. Sure it's overkill, but isn't that the point of this forum?

What about some kind of semi-truck filter? They must have some big a$$ filters!

Now that I think about it, it would probably be cheaper and easier for me to just get a dual filter mount and two smaller filters. (like the PH8A) Now, I asked a while ago about using the Purolator equivalent of the PH8A, the PL30001 for the transmission. It's not specifically rated for transmission use, but I would like to be able to use it since it's what I use for an oil filter. Think I'll have any problems with it?

My B&M kit came with a Group 7(made by Purolator) filter. My two concerns were having enough room for mounting, and does a oil filter rated for 5K work properly as a 30K trans filter?

I'm going to change it yearly to be on the safe side.

PH8A options are,Baldwin B2, "Microlite Full-Flow Lube Spin-on (Also Used as Hydraulic or Transmission)"
So is this a special dual purpose lube/trans filter?

Any experts care to comment?

ZmOz , a dual mount is a good idea and I see no problems. I did a xreference on BT251 and found that a XL filter like a Purolator L40017 should fit too.

Anti-Drain Back Valve: Yes
Height: 6.90
Type of Filter: Spin-on
Threads: 3/4-16
Thread Pitch: UNF-2B
Relief Valve P.S.I.: 8-11
O.D.: 3.78

Doesn't appear to have a bypass valve...that would be a bad idea for a transmission wouldn't it?

Even if it did have a bypass valve, the rated bypass pressure would not work in a transmission line. The lines going to the cooler carry very minimal pressure and would never be able to "trip" the bypass valve. If you ever had enough crap in the transmission to plug that kind of filter, the transmission would have totally died.

Adding extra fluid will not help it last much longer. Keeping the fluid from overheating will though. Using a good cooler would probably get you way more benifit than adding more volume.

If you really want more volume, check into a deep pan for your transmission, they usually add between 2 and 3 quarts depending on which one you use.

Most bypass valves are around 8 psi. The transmission cooler line has more pressure than that. Again, I'm not worried about the filter plugging up, but something going wrong with the filter. Adding extra fluid will help extend the life of the fluid, and thus, the life of the transmission. This one already holds a relatively small amount anyway, about 8 quarts. There are no deeper pans available, but even if they were it would cost several hundred dollars, compared to $25 for a dual filter mount.

51773 from WIX is the bigger basic Ford filter. The B2 Balwin mentions:
