New to the forum. What's the general concensus on Warren SuperTech dino 5w-30. I'm considering using it in my truck, 4 cyl chevy 4X4. Will it hold up to severe service with 3,000 mile OCI's?

I'd personally rather go with Mobil 1 for another 88 cents a quart while I'm at Wal-Mart. For the money, I wouldn't buy the supertech fully synthetic. For a 3,000 mile oil change, I'd probably forget using a synthetic and use a good conventional oil like Pennzoil/Quaker State or Chevron/Havoline.

For 3000 mile OCI ...sure. Quite a few here on the board use it and enjoy their $7 oil changes.

How do you define "severe duty"? Just curious.

If a low priced, meets minimum standards oil is what you are looking for it is probably OK.

If you want a well regarded oil at a low price, pick up Chevron by the case at Costco or watch the sales/rebates on Chevron Supreme, Texaco Havoline, Pennzoil, Phillips TropArtic, Motorcraft or Castrol GTX. Any of those are, IMO, better oils than WalMart's house brand stuff. Also, look for the new formulations which are GF-4 rated. Just coming on the market now.

I work at a wal-mart warehouse (yard driver, get the priviledge to sometimes put a whole trailer of oil in the dock door) and the supertech we get in is made by mobil. It comes from the paulsboro, NJ refinery. That doesent mean all distribution centers get the tech2000 from the same supplier. The giveaway to tell if it is mobil is that they have the same shaped bottles.

The only way to know for sure is to run it and do a UOA at the end of your 3000 miles. Find out if your engine likes the oil and grade for your severe conditions. You can adjust product and time from there.

Basser, it will probably be OK, but my vote is for the WalMart Synthetic in the 5qt jugs for under $12. I've run this oil and it works great. It's a "correctly priced" Group III syn, unlike many others on the market. {not starting the GIII vs G4 argument here, just making a point about the SuperTech oil.}

I spoke to the tech folks at Warren, They claim they get their base oil from Motiva.Grp II and IIplus(5w30). Their additives come from Lubrizol. They blend it to the reccomended concentration from Lubrizol for SL/GF3. So tell me, what does Valvoline, Pennzoil, Quakerstate or any of the bigger names have on Warren SuperTech, besides charging more for all the advertising.

Good oil analysis results. Last time I looked the additive package from Supertech was very weak. It gave O.K. results in the limited oil analysis we saw but it falls short of Motorcraft, GTX, Pennzoil/Chevron. And Lubrizol sells lots of additive packages-cheap ones and expensive ones. I could make a stab at which one goes in the Supertech and which one goes in the Motorcraft.

Garyb80: Do you know if this is the Warren SuperTech?

Al: I know that Valvoline uses Lubrizol additives.

To all: Does anyone have any insight to how the Infinium addititive packages rate?

The SuperTech dino will provide a basic level of performance. My preferences, however, would be to find the current Shell, Citgo, TropArtic or Mobil on sale for $0.99 a quart as a step up in an additive package.

As far as Warren being the supplier of Supertech, it depends on your region. Here is a previous thread with good discussion on the subject:

Walmart SuperTech Sources

For many years I used Super Tech 10W/30 dino oil in a 1988 Toyota pickup 4 cyl. engine that carried a small 900 lbs. camper that never was taken off. It always started and ran fine with no engine problems and when I sold it earlier this year with 174,000 it was still running fine. I now use Super Tech 5W/30 in my 1999 F150 V6 and it runs fine. I paid $4.23 for a five quart bottle of Super Tech which had the same API SL certification as did all the branded oils on the shelf including high milage and synthetic oils. Engine oils have become a commodity and all the API SL oils will perform well in your engine, if they are the proper viscosity, in my opinion.

WEll maybe I'll give it a try. I've kinda been favoring the new mobil drive clean though, My nephew works for the Mobil refinery in NJ. He verified for me that they use a Grp III base stock in the 5w-30. He also said they get their additives from Infinium, that's why I asked about their additives.

I guess we now have pretty good evidence that Mobil DC is a group III

I've used Supertech Semi Synthetic 7 times so far, My high revving Hyundai Tiburon is runnign smooth , I do alot of High way travel and alot of Hellish City traveling.. My car has 85,000 miles running like a champ

In the Deep South I prefer 10W-30.

Just depends on how often you want to be under the Truck.

SuperTech - 3000 mi
5 qt + filter = $6.37
$2.12 per 1000 mi

Chevron/Havoline - 4000 mi
5 qt + filter = $6.92
$1.73 per 1000 mi

Rotella T 10W-30 - 6000 mi
5 qt + filter = $10.67
$1.78 per 1000 mi

Mobil 1 - 8000 mi
5 qt + filter = $21.79
$2.72 per 1000 mi
