What's left as used RWD compacts?

Had our 1982 320i (larger [censored] child of the 2002) next to a 2009 BMW 135i yesterday, the 1-series is substantially larger than the 3-series, even.

Surprising.

There's also Mazda RX-8 that someone mentioned in another thread. Not sure if you can find an early (2004?) model for under $10K though...

2011 135i Convertible:

Code:

Curb Weight MT 3638

Height 55.6

Length 171.7

Track (Front) 58.0

Track (Rear) 59.3

Weight Distribution MT (Front) 49

Weight Distribution MT (Rear) 51

Wheelbase 104.7

Width 68.8

1991 318i:
Code:

Curb Weight MT 2657

Height 54.3

Length 175.2

Track (Front) 55.4

Track (Rear) 55.7

Weight Distribution MT (Front) 54

Weight Distribution MT (Rear) 46

Wheelbase 101.2

Width 64.8

What does the non-convertable weight? I can look it up, hang on...

The i128 Coupe gets closer, but is still heavy. Air bags and what not add to the weight.

Measurements

* Width: 68.8 in.
* Height: 56.0 in.
* Length: 171.7 in.
* Front track: 58.4 in.
* Rear track: 59.7 in.
* Wheel base: 104.7 in.

* Gross weight: 4134 lbs.
* Gross weight: 0.31 in.
* Curb weight: 3252 lbs.

So it's about 600# heavier than the 318i listed, but comes with a bigger engine, wider track, shorter length.

While my 135i does everything better, the tossability and fun to drive character of my 318i is tough to beat.

Looks like the 3-series is an inch shorter, 4 inches narrower, 5 inches longer, 1000 lbs lighter, and 3 inch shorter wheelbase.

My how we have grown for the 1 to be basically "larger" than the 3 of 20 years ago.

Miata's are VERY reliable, fairly plentiful, and can fit more person that they look. Plus, they are easy to tweak, if you choose to go tht route - lots of aftermarket.

The only thing that hasn't been brought up in this thread is a Mustang. Shop carefully, and you could even get a much older Fox-bodies 87-93 with a V-8 that will do what you want.

Fuel economy is abyssmal.

I could average a little over 20mpg on my 12A powered RX-7 if I stayed out of the secondaries. I don't know of many 13Bs or RENESIS that do that well.

If you don't mind the Series II 3800, The 5 speed V6 Camaro up to 2002 should be able to get at least 30 mpg freeway.

A second generation (1989-1999) Toyota MR2 Turbo w/ MT might float your boat.

That's because he said he wanted a 4-cylinder engine.

WILL require work, almost guaranteed.
2200-2400 lbs rear drive, enough power to have tons of fun, easily upgradable, reliable as can be (if taken care of)

Oh, and before I modified the [censored] out of it, I got between 28 and 36 MPG with my first one, with one tank at 38.

Fuel ratings are in the 22 city to 28 hwy range, I believe.
I don't do real city driving (i.e. downtown Atlanta, etc.) much, but I average 28ish -- or better if I go easy on the GXP. On a trip at 60-65 mph I could probably bring in well over 30 (think 32-34 area). Not bad for 290/340 power stats.

Have you considered an early to late 90s Mercedes W201? The W201 is maybe the best Benz ever designed (with the possible exception of the W140) and in your price range.

I have seen and heard of way too many early engine deaths in the RX-8.

yeah but weight is the most expensive thing in a car if you care about handling.
