Seems like the advent of CVT's the transmissions are serialized with the ECU requiring someone with $$$ software. It's no longer just a mechanical swap. When did this become a thing?
What year did auto manufactuers "serialize" the transmissions with the ECU?

depends on the mfr, and it's not necessarily restricted to just CVT's 
In 2006, Mercedes began making the 722.9, which included serialization of the conductor plate as a theft relevant part, coded to the VIN.
as i have noted newer + more issues if you want to repair or even worse replace with another whatever, so i stay away! my new on 2001 jetta had the key code in the factory manual BUT no more so get out your wallet $$$ if you need the STEALER!!
