What would you recommend?

I have a 1994 Z24 Cavalier with a 3.1 V6. I use this car for drag racing. I drive the car to the track, race it, and then drive it back home. What 10W30 conventional oil would everybody recommend? Also, what brand oil filter? I've only had this car a little while and only changed oil once in it and I used Castrol GTX and a Fram filter. Does anyone recommend anything different?

You can't do much better than Castrol unless you move up to syn. As far at the "F" word goes, a lot of guys don't like Fram, and I have to admit once I saw a cutaway version, I was not impressed with the construction. I'm partial to Wix, but you're gonna get a LOT of opinions about the filter here.

P.S. Love your car....Drove a 3.1 Sunbird 5-speed in 1991 and that was one of the most entertaining cars I'd ever driven (to that point anyway). Take care of it!

I love this car too! Mine is an automatic..white with blue interior. Everything is still stock.

Castrol GTX was the top conventional performer in this series of ASTM tests at http://www.amsoil.com/lit/g1971.pdf .
If you want some cheap horsepower, switch to synthetic.

Tim : how much horsepower do you think he will gain from switching to Amsoil 10w30 from Castrol 10w30?

Amsoil says 1 to 2% increase when going from conventional to synthetic. Royal Purple says more like 2-5%. Lots of info on horsepower improvement testing at the Royal Purple website.

I recomend a new filter and a V8 to go with it!

Stick with the GTX....but get a Wix Napa Gold filter.
