What weight would this make it?

The more I read the more it seems that Mobil 1 is a very thin oil, almost to thin. I would like to keep using it as it seems to be a "top of the line oil" and very easy to buy anywhere but would like it to be a little thicker. Right now I'm using Mobil 1 5w30 in both my Camaro ls1 and Chevy 5.3 vortec. I here some folks add 1 or 2 qts of 15w50 to 4 qts of 5w or 10w30 to thicken it up. So what weight does this make the oil now? Also does the 2 different weight oils seperate at all when in use or after the engine is off for a while or do they compleetly blend together permenitly? One more thing, would my engine be better protected by mixing Mobil 1 15w50 and the 5w30 vs. just straight 5w30 or 10w30 or would it not make much of a differance as far as protection goes and covering up knock and noise which I'm not sure if my engines are doing? Thanks again!

Without doing analysis on it, it's hard to say the exact final viscosity, but if you mix 2qts 15w50 with 4qts 10w30 the oil will end up with a hot viscosity closer to a high 30wt to low 40wt.

I'd agree here also. I mixed and topped off about 1.5 quarts of the crankcase of my Toyota (4 qt capacity) with 15W-50-the rest being 10W-30. The vinal viscosity in my oil analysis was mid 30 wt. (12.25 cSt) The range of a 30 wt is 9.3 cSt to 12.5 cSt) I would use the 10W vs the 5W.

My guess is with this mix you'll still have a 10w30 oil, but one that is heavier than straight Mobil 1 10w30. Remember, for an oil to qualify as a 10wXX under the J-300 spec, it can have a max vis at -25*C of 7000 cP. Straight Mobil 1 10w30 is 3848 cp @ -25*C. Blending in some 15w50 at less than a 50/50 mix will raise the low temp vis, but probably not enough to get it above 7000 cP. On the high temp end, it will probably still be a 30wt, which can be as high as 12.49 cSt at 100*C. Mobil 1 straight 10w30 is 9.8, so mixing in a moderate amount of 15w50 probably won't push it over the 12.49 max.

I meant 11.25

Will the 0w40 be ok to use in an ls1 and a 5.3 liter V8 all year round in Colorado? Can this oil void the warranty as the owners manuel says not to use this oil? Why would this be better for the engines? Sorry I really don't much yet and you lost me with all those fancy numbers!! [Eek!] You have to speak in layman's terms for me! Thanks a bunch! The 0w40 would definitely be better for the LS1, you'll burn less oil with it and it's higher HTHS number will protect the engine better than the thin 5w30/10w30 Mobil 1 would. As far as warranty goes, just put in 5w30 if you ever have to go in and make a claim for engine work.

As a "0" weight it would flow plenty fast. faster as a matter of fact than M1 5w-30. Fred... [Smile]

I too have a 5.3 and it uses some 0-30 Mobil 1. I am thinking maybe doing 3 quarts 0-30 and 3 0-40 to see if that slows down the consumption.

Hi nhkid, What is your oil pressure at cold idle/fully hot idle and crusing? Also how many miles are on your 5.3?
