I'm very much a rookie regarding knowledge of motor oils and happened upon this site. I've been using Castrol GTX 10w30 in summer and 10w40 in winter in my 92 Toyota truck (V6), 01 Highlander (4cylinder) and 01 Rav4. After researching what oil I wanted to start using in my ATV I am now considering Rotella T 15w40 for my Toys due to the positives I've read. Your suggestions/feedback are much appreciated.

I would use the Delvac 5w40 instead of the Rotella for your Toyotas. The Delvac is a very good oil.

Daily Drives:
-2003 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner XtraCab, 2.7 Liter , Mobil1 Synthetic SS 5W-30.
ODO 7950 Miles.
-1995 Toyota 4-Runner 3.0 V6, Mobil1 Synthetic SS 10W-30.
ODO 84300 Miles.

Rotella 15w40.....or rotella T syn 5w40?

OOOPS!...Got the weights and seasons backwards. 10w40 was summer and 10w30 was winter. Considering Rotella 15w40 not T 5w40. My wife and daughter click off 3,500 miles too quickly to spend the extra $$ on synthetics. I know the syns can go longer b/w changes but what about the filter? Do you synthetic users just change the filter every 3,500 or so and the oil 7-8,000? Thanks again for the feedback!

It would seem to me that if they are driving a lot of miles synthetic would be a nice choice. For example, if they do 10,000 miles in 6 months, you likely could use synthetic and do only two oil changes per year. I would be inclinde to change the filter once during a 10K oil change interval, but an oversized filter very well may go the distance. Unfortunately, there is no simple way to tell when a filter is used up. Filters are relatively cheap, though, so two in 10K would be easiest.

The Highlander has 64,000 and the Rav4 34,000. Is it safe to change to synthetic at this stage in the engines life? A friend switched to synthetic in his Toy 4x4 and it leaked like crazy. Also, where can I buy Delvac 5w40? I also read on some other board that Mobil is offering Delva5w40 under another name. Is this true?

Delvac 1 5W40 is rebottled as Mobil 1 Truck & SUV 5W40. You may not need this in your climate. I run it only because it gets over 130 dF on the roads in the hot months here in S. AZ.

As long as you've kept frequent OCIs on your vehicles, you should have no problem with synthetic. I'd just run a good 5W30 or 10W30 year round.

If you change your oil at 5K or sooner, you could run any decent oil, dino or synth in Toyotas. You'll still make it to 200K-300K if you keep them that long.
