These threads just ROCK!

I was 15 or 16, changed the oil on my first car: 1995 Pontiac Grand Prix. V6 3.1 or 3.4(I cant recall which one).

Nice spout to drain off oil once the filter was removed, too, but that could have been added by PO.

All 3.4's have that spout you are talking about, and it does make changes easier.

It had to be my old '70s Briggs and Stratton minibike that I got at a garage sale for $10 when I was about 8.

I had to lay it on it's side and spilled oil everywhere except the catch pan. Then spilled more oil out of the SAE30 Quaker State can trying to pour into the small fill hole. I was ultimately successful but made a [heckuva] mess on my Dad's garage floor.

Nice. It was such a clean Grand Prix. 82,000 miles, 1 owner car from Florida(no rust). Engine bay, etc...the owner and/or the dealer did a great job on the cleanliness of the car(especially interior engine bay, it was impressive).

Then...a Hummer H2 had to U-turn right in front me doing about 45 MPH.

Mine was on my 1998 Pontiac Sunfire... I got sick of going to the quick lube places and wanted to just do it myself. Bought some Mobil 1 oil and filter and bought some ramps. I have done every oil change since, including my brother and parents cars.

I remember starting my car after that oil change, it was a great feeling.

^Lol, similar story here. I first started going to Valvoline quick change and overpaying. Meh, it was fun getting in and out so quick. Now, I enjoy taking my time. Take an hour or two out of nice afternoon, then go to the park afterward with the fam.

Right around when I joined this forum in '02 on my Toyota truck. The dealer had just screwed up my truck be not tightening the bolts on the skid plate and ruined all the threads. I'd been thinking about doing it as I'd just got my house the year before and didn't have to play by apartment rules.
That was the second to last time I had a dealer change the oil. Three years ago I was out of state for an extended time and had a dealer change the oil as I didn't have a place to do it or all my tools. THIS dealer didn't tighten up all of the SAME bolts, EITHER!!

Bumping another great thread to see if anyone else has a memory to add.....wish I'd had the 'courage' to start doing my own changes sooner....

My first oil change was when I was ... 12, maybe? Helping my dad with changing the oil in his Toyota truck. Valvoline 10w40 and a Fram ExtraGuard filter. I "helped him" a lot - I put it in quotes because it was probably more of a hassle to have me tagging along than anything. I change my own oil now, and have recently added a son to our family, so looking forward to repeating this tradition with him!

I may avoid the Extra Guard and 10w40, though ...

On my truck a few years ago.

10w30 QSHM No API Rating, still have the bottle "SM Equivelent" has Mark Martin on the cover, Also had Slick 50 in it.

Supertech Oil Filter...

Figured Id give it a shot, this OC was like 13$, back when QSHM was 9.97 at Walmart, and a ST Filter was 2.97.
Good times, LOL.

I remember standing in the Auto Section at Walmart, and some lady was like "Castrol and Fram never failed me". Didnt know squat about the stuff, I was 17. I took the Fram filter out of the box and almost crushed it like a soda can. So I went with the Supertech.

The one after that was the old "New and Improved 15$" QSHM, w/o slick 50, and a Purolator 20195.

If I had to go back, I woulda stocked up on the QSHM w/ Slick 50, IDK I remember my truck loving the stuff.

Oh yeah, prior to this OC the only people to touch it were Ford, and my mums mechanic who was the last one to do the OC, at a 3000 mile interval, the oil he uses (Kendall 10w30) was like tar black, and the filter he uses (Napa Pro Choice) was rattling. Ah well. It was also about to rain, and the dang oil pan was like so tight, I had to run up to a mom and pop station because I stripped out the head to the bolt, with a good 45 minutes of banging a smaller socket on the head, it came off.. went home, did the OC in the rain, never any problems afterwards

I enjoyed that experience and still love to change my own oil.

Forgot to say Pennzoil and I think it was 10W30.

Till this day I miss my 66 Falcon, lots of fond memories. That 200 I6 was a great engine and so easy to work on!

Maybe easy but not much fun...

I had a '67 Falcon with 289 that I swapped in a 351 from a '69 Torino GT... That Falcon was one of few back in the day with P/S, P/B & A/C... Had vinyl seats and rubber floor mat, strange car...

Great thread! Memories!

July 1984 with my rusty 1970 Cheby Chevelle Malibu sport couple with 350-2v small block. 10W-40 PYC (Pennzoil yellow "can"). Vintage oil spouts that you punched into the oil cans.

Of course, we nearly all used the Fram orange oil filters. The days of the oil cans were waning rapidly though and by the late 1980's, quart plastic bottles had all but replaced quart oil cans.

1968 Rambler American. 199 cubic inch inline 6 with auto trans. Bought brand new for $1895.00!! Steady diet of Quaker State 10w-30 and Lee or Fram oil filters every 2K miles. Used about 1QT per 1K miles. Sold it at 168k miles. Never missed a beat.

My Condolences.

Tech4 (IV-Tech, Tech-IV, 4Tech ... can't remember) iron duke in an '89 celebrity - fool thing had a 4" drain plug that doubled as the cartridge filter access. That cover only needed to be little more than finger tight because it had the wonderful way of magically cinching itself tight. Of course the Jiffy Lube boys gave it a good cranking on for the little old lady that owned it before me and it took me+my neighbor+4ft breaker to get it off. Also, there was no way of getting the cartridge out without making a mess. It would sneeze on you as the lower seal came out of the bore.

ETA: FRAM filter (I get a pass for it being a cartridge, right?) + whatever Mobil called their conventional around 2000
