In the 1840's a Canadian geologist and physician developed a combustible liquid hydrocarbon derived from oil shales and coal tar.

What was this name of this combustible liquid and what was the name of the developer?

This QOTD is open to all.

Kerosene. Basically today's jet fuel, used in many turbine engines, from helicopters, to planes, and more. A large tank of it is in our yard. Cannot remember the fellows name sorry.

Good answers and thanks to all who contributed.

In the 1840's Canadian geologist and physician Abraham Gesner developed a combustible liquid hydrocarbon derived from oil shales and coal tar, and in 1854 trademarked it, "Kerosene."

After the discovery of petroleum and it derivatives in 1859, Kerosene was made from petroleum distillation.

The term Kerosene became such a generic term later on the courts ruled that the name could no longer be trademarked.

It was also known as "coal oil" for a long time in the general population.
