What to do with the donut and starburst

As reported today in Lube Report part of the discussion about the next generation of PCMO has to do with how does the consumer know which oil to use. The starburst and donut today already confuse a lot of people, not to mention throwing in things like the Dexos mark or a long list of OEM specs on the back.

Considering that the goal is to help the average consumer with their oil choice which of the following three options would you choose?

The downside is that a new certification mark will require an educational process and could lead to confusion.

By the way... I forgot to mention that my preference would be option 3 because I think it would be better in the long run.

All of them have their difficulties. For those of us (i.e BITOG type people) who understand this, the first option is fine because we're going to look at the bottle carefully and know what we're grabbing, and we'll also know that 5w30s and the like will be the current style ILSAC stuff, not the new, very low viscosity, and that a 0w-16 should be only used were specified.

Ideally, everyone should pay attention and manufacturers should write their manuals carefully. Reading a little paragraph in the manual and then paying attention to what one buys isn't exactly daunting. Crimony, we have people here who mix oils (and who aren't employed in the field) using well reasoned and careful principles. We have people that go out of spec intentionally. Surely, it's not a big stretch for the average motorist to spend five minutes reading something a couple times and retaining the information.

AMERICAN PETROLEUM INSTITUTE CERTIFED FOR GASOLINE ENGINES doesn't convey to the general public that an oil meets ILSAC GF-x, IMO.

I agree the current system has issues. The problem comes that there are so many vehicle manuals that have the existing marks and it is absolutely critical that we continue to have those for the customers that drive those cars. It would cause issues if they completely changed everything.

I also think that the API and organizations making these decisions maybe are of the opinion that these marks are better understood than they are in reality. One of the questions I am asked all the time has to do with explaining why one oil would have the starburst and another doesn't even if they are the same API service category. If the average consumer doesn't understand the current labeling system, then imagine what it would be like making any kind of drastic change.
 
Definitely agree on the 3rd one.

While I do think that it may cause more confusion, I am in the mindset that it's not hard for people who aren't oil savvy to just either Google what oil their car needs, or check their manual.

Plus, think of it this way: People who care about their cars should care to learn about things like oil. What kind of a so called "gearhead" (which I do like to identify myself as being) doesn't know how to read an oil bottle? Besides that, I'm sure that either a store worker could help you out, or even some other people lurking around in the automotive section. Who knows, it could be one of us that helps them out.

Now, I'm not saying that I think those people who "don't care" about their oil should deserve to accidentally throw in the wrong kind of oil (specifically, putting GF-6B in something that shouldn't have it). I'm just saying that it's a contradiction for someone who doesn't care about their oil to A) be a DIY'er and thus B) go to a store and buy oil so they can change their own oil. People who don't care shouldn't change their own oil, it's non sequitur. Therefore, those of whom "don't care" should allow a mechanic (or a dealer or even a service lube shop) to do it for them.

Then again, there's always the occasional person who thinks they already know without actually having checked what they're car needs, or having even learned much about oil. Now, those guys can just be our experimental group. We'll soon see what happens to a car spec'd for a higher grade when its run on 0w-16! Lol.

All good points. I think I might email the guy doing the survey that's talked about in the article and provide him with a link to this thread.

It will be a great way to involve the general BITOG community in the GF-6 process (even if it is in a small way). So everybody else, keep your answers coming because it could make a difference!
 
Maybe they could have oil sold only behind the pharmacist's counter, and one has to answer a skill testing question about API, ILSAC, or ACEA specifications to get access.
