what to do to keep my tranny like new

My transmission in my 92 Chevy truck has 12,000 miles on it. It was a rebuilt transmission. I want to do whatever possible to keep it running cool and well. Any fluid recommendations or anything? To my knowledge it has regular dexron in it. All advice is appreciated thanks guys.
 
I'll default to recommending Maxlife ATF in it, and changing it every 30-40k miles or so. Regardless, change the fluid regularly. More often with cheap Dex/Merc, less often with more expensive fluid. But keep changing that fluid. Also, an auxiliary transmission cooler for the warmer months will help out keeping the transmission cooled down, especially if the truck is used like a truck should be. A Magnefine inline filter is a good idea too. If the rebuild goes south, it'll help prevent hard component damage.
 
Definitely timely fluid changes...I'm not talking *iffy Lube flushes though....but actual "pan drops" where they change the filter, the gasket (if necessarily....but more than likely recommended), and add typically 2-4 quarts of ATF to "top if off"...
 
Yep, regular fluid changes and a Magnefine. Maybe install a temperature gauge to see if you would benefit from an auxiliary transmission cooler as well.
 
Would you guys recommended using any additves in it to keep it cooler. I believe it has a trans cooler I think the guy had one put on when the tranny was replaced
 
OK dumb question what can you do to be abusive on an auto besides shifting from reverse to drive without stopping or neutral drops.
 
Good trany coolers have a temperature controlled bypass valve so that the trany fluid is not cooled when the trany requires heat, like when warming up in the winter. Cheap trany coolers do not have a bypass valve. Cheap trany coolers should be installed so that the flow of fluit is through it, and then through the cooler in the radiator. This way the radiator still adds heat to the trany fluid in the winter. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- When you have your trany fluid and filter changed, keep in mind that about half the fluid is in the torque converter, and unless the torque converter is drained, only half the fluid is being changed. A good trany shop will charge (depending on the vehicle), something like 80 to 120 dollars extra to drop the trany to drain the torque converter when they change the trany fluid and filter.
 
All the advice given is good, but we know nothing about the quality of the rebuild. Was it a GM rebuilt, Aamco, Joe's garage, or what? You are at the mercy of the parts used and the competence of the shop in addition to your own maintenance.
 
It was done at transmissions to go. Sounds promising doesn't it LOL. They did have good reviews online and when I called them to ask a few questions they were decent but it worries me
 
I'm shocked that no one has recommended.... Lubegard Red....which many on this website highly favor. 1 to 2 oz. per quart of transmission fluid....helps the tranny run cooler....and provides many other benefits as well. It can be purchased on Amazon.....and O'Reilys.

The usual dose is 1oz to 1qt i.e. 3%; I really do not think extra 3% is going to cause any overfill condition!

How much ATF fluid (total quarts)... does your vehicle hold ?
