What Standby Generator are you buying for your house?

Is this something you are actually faced with? Having nearly unlimited funds? These kinds of threads are speculative junk.

Wouldn't it be more pragmatic to discuss what to buy on a moderate budget, recognizing that you'll have to balance funds with power needs?

No standby generator. Completely off the grid solar with a ton of battery backup. Not roof mount, I'd clear a section of property for a properly sized array.

Victron would make a pile of money off me.

speculative junk? k.

I'd probably think about my own wind and solar farm with a battery array, if I lost power from the main line have it auto switch and the backup batteries would kick in and only power what I considered essential functions or areas.
To back that up, a hefty diesel generator with a few thousand gallons of red diesel that I bought from a retired hospital.

Whether I had $5k or $500k, my choice wouldn't change.

I'd probably get a 7.5kw unit. I recognize that I don't "need" all my appliances to run at the same time.

Winter: I only need the furnace and fridge and some lights.
Summer: I only need the fridge and a small window a/c for bedroom and some lights.

I'd take the rest of my money and invest it, where it will earn money instead of depreciate.

being related to a generac/cummins dealer, whatever you do buy a water cooled unit. they can actually run for long periods without frying all the oil out of them.

There is a gas station in California on I40 in the town of Fenner. Also referred to as Goffs which is incorrect.

Highest priced gas in the state because there's nothing else around for 50+ miles.

It used to be ran by 2 large generators. Powered by huge caterpillar diesel engines.

This cat engines were screaming 24/7 at what sounded like their max speed. Probably 2100 rpm or so ,

Place went solar a few years ago and now you can hear the add's on the gas pumps.

None, I’d just hop on my personal plane/helicopter and go to one of my other houses that had power.

Now for the world I currently live in (minus the 100m), I have a champion 8750/7k open frame inverter portable generator (which is not a standby).

Just dreaming, you win $100M on the lottery and have a reasonable sized house. What standby generator are you buying?
At that kind of money I am hiring someone else to figure it out for me.

I’d probably buy a whole house generator that ran on LPG, while converting from heating oil to gas also (and adding central air). What kind I don’t know offhand, as I don’t dream about doing this.

I would put the $100M in T-bills and run the 4000W WEN generator I already have.

Maybe buy a solar panel or two, with a battery power station. I am actually going to buy those anyway, but I figure if I have $100M I might have time to do so. :ROFLMAO:

My Billionaire boss had a huge modern generator installed at his 69,000 sq foot mansion. As you might expect a critical circuit board running the thing died during the only hurricane power outage he experienced. We had to fly to some remote state to pick up a replacement. The beast was down for a few days. At least it was reasonably easy to replace.

I always recommend an open frame, conventional (non inverter) Honda 390 powered genset for emergencies. Easy to service, perform oil changes, and nearly fool proof reliability.
