If we would eliminate all human life there would be a lot less pollution.
It's one of those things you can twist however you want, by picking what pollutants are "bad".
That bunker oil exhaust is probably pretty full of particulates. But pound for pound it's a better way of getting stuff across oceans than, say, jet airplanes.
My 2-stroke motorized bike gets >100 MPG, and therefore has low CO2 emissions... but the unburned hydrocarbons are multitudes worse than any 4 stroke car.
We also have emission fads... our fetish being low NOx which makes diesel cars hard to find... Europe is more low CO2 which means diesels everywhere.
