which "common availability" oils are in what group?
Is there a list somewhere?

Chevron/havoline and Pennzoil are group 2 +. I think all the other dinos are group 2 or 1. All synthetics you can buy at any old auto parts store are group 3, except Mobil 1 and the German version of Castrol Syntech 0w-30. All the premium synthetics I believe are Ester or PAO, including German Castrol and Mobil 1, along with Redline, Amsoil etc.

All conventional multi-grade motor oils will be Group II (10W-30, some 5w-30) or II+ (5W-30).
