The owners manual says to use a straight 40wt is this still what people use on boats? We will be useing all year long. The motors have 700 hours on them.

"The motors have 700 hours on them"

700 hours without a rebuild is pretty amazing. If things look clean under the valve cover, and the engines run well, find out what the previous owner used, buy that, then let us know.

Otherwise there are plenty of good multi-vis 40 weight oils you could/should try. Straight 40 weight will be a little tougher to find.

If the compression is still uniformly strong, you could probably do fine with a straight 30. Otherwise, if you've done this well on straight 40, I'd stick with that. Several major HDEOs come in a 40:

Double-check your required API service approval (if any), as the single vis HDEOs don't always cover the newer sequences.

I've got engines with over 700 hours. It's easy enough with good, sustained maintenance habits, and if you don't play go-fast every time out.

Like Volvohead said, the no-brainer approach is to keep using a straight 40 as it has kept the motors going up until this point.

I'll add Chevron Delo 100 to that list, too:

But with year-round use in Portland Oregon, I still would want to use a multi-weight (15W-40), for easier starting and reduced wear on start-up, with only one reservation: you might find the consumption too high. There's only one way to find out.

Uh, 700 hours is nothing if the engine is maintained. Those engines could easily go 1200-2000 hours before a top end job. Depends what they are pushing. As for 40w Pennzoil Marine or Delo or Delvac will do fine. Walmarts carry Pennzoil 40w and any West Marine will have Pennzoil or Delo 40w. BTW, if your West Marine doesn't have it they will order it for you.
