What oil in older Rambler engine?

I'd use and SL rated 10W-30, ideally Shell Rotella. Autozone sells an oil called "Valuecraft" here that is SL-rated and I think it's made by Warren. After the engine is broken in, I'd consider Mobil1 10W-30 High Mileage (SL rated and meets ACEA A3) and change it once a year...

If you need thick, use a 15-40 dino HDMO .

He is in Texas. But ya, startup is an issue. Really RTS 5/40 would be a great fit.

Go for Delo if you can find it.

I might have said 10w-30 if he was in a 4 season climate. The basic engine design is pretty much bulletproof. I'd try to make sure the carb was in good shape to minimize the fuel management issues. That will put the most wear on this engine.
