Good thought / idea. That way there's no argument if something goes awry with an oil brand you recommended.
Let the blame fall on the vehicle owner's recommendation.

That's why I ask a couple of questions..to avoid this,

Me: "hey, how's that oil working out for ya?"
Them: "I dumped it, it didn't do anything for the leak"
Me: "What leak?"
Them: "Yeah, I've had a small leak so I ended up going with M1 HiMi and it seems to be working"
Me: "Oh, you never said you had a leak.."
Them: "You never asked.."

Yep, can't go wrong with M1, you always know it's a good well formulated oil.

The only reason I don't recommend it in Australia is because of price, about $100 for 5L. You can spend less than half that and still get a good oil here.

Have they changed the formulation recently? In a Facebook truck forum I belong to someone that seems knowledgeable claims the formulation is not as stout as it once was and there are better choices like ls30 and Schaeffer 9000.

No to Walmart, Yes to very hot.

If it's a European car I usually go Shell Helix Ultra:
mid-SAPS ECT 5W30 (C3, BMW LL-04, MB 229.51)
full-SAPS 5W40 (A3/B4, BMW LL-01, MB 229.5)

Unless it's an Audi / VW then it's Nulon European 5W30 with VW 504/507

This stuff is also easy to find and reasonably priced (for Australia)

Great choice, I wish we got that here

Three good Castrol Magnatec oils that serve most here are

Magnatec "Stop-Start" 5W30 (API SN/CF, ACEA A3/B4)

Magnatec "Fuel-Saver DX" 5W30 (API SN-Plus, ILSAC GF-5, Dexos1-Gen2)

Magnatec "Diesel DX" 5W40 (API SN/CF, ACEA C3, Dexos2)

All are full synthetic.

Just today, coworker asked me if Harvest King oil is any good. I said yeah, it's fine for a normal car. He said what about for my truck?

He drives a 500+ horsepower Roush supercharged F-150.

My response was;

Why are you putting $13 oil in that truck?
He said ok. I'll just stick to Valvoline.

Yeah, Rotella Gas Truck, that is another great oil you guys have that we don't get over here.

However we do get this new full synthetic Magnatec "SUV" 5W30 that is API SN/CF, ACEA C3, MB 229.51 and Dexos2 which comes in a big 7L jug. Many people are going light duty diesel these days that require a mid-SAPS C3 style oil and have a larger sump.

Would that be an oil salesman?

Your down-under oils are a little different.
I think the full synthetic Magnatec 5/30 flavor here is SN Plus / Dexos1 Gen2.

.... or maybe things have changed and I'm wrong.

Hi T7,

Yes I think you are correct, I've listed most of the full synthetic Castrol Magnatec and Valvoline SynPower oils below. Here we seem to go for a diversity of specification and approvals.

I like that, as a formula can be a bit more optimised that way. For example API & ILSAC are more restrictive on Phos (and hence ZDDP) levels than ACEA A5/B5 or Ford 913-D. This allows me to select a resource conserving 5W30 that is either low-ZDDP & GF-5 / Dexos1 or high-ZDDP & A5 / Ford 913-D.

If someone wants a thin 5W30 they get SN & GF-5, if they want a thick and high TBN 5W30 they get SN & A3/B4, if they want a thick and mid-SAPS 5W30 they get SN & C3.

The thing is this diversity is all available at the local auto-stores. Then you get the thick and heavy Penrite range of oils which is even more diverse.

Cheers and Merry Christmas,
SR5
