I'm curious what engine characteristics make it a "sludgemonster"? Physically what is happening between engine and oil?.

Can an engine dramatically alter an oil's molecular structure? Do camshaft gears literally chop up an oil's long molecular strings??

What characteristics make an engine "kind" to oil vs. what makes it "tear" up oil.
