What lubricant is typically used on the splines of the yokes of a drive shaft when assembling 2 pieces together?
Also, what is used on the outside of the shaft yoke (the polished part) when sliding into the seal of a transfer case?

Interesting. That is what I thought. My last assembly, I lubed up the splines and the outer shaft assembling a transfer case to a transmission and drive shafts to transfer case with bearing grease.
I had no noticeable issues with the drive shafts, but did notice that the grease slung off the outside of the shaft going into the tranny, causing a ring of grease around the edge of the inside of the transmission (I saw this when I had to disassemble it again) After that I assumued that grease on the outside of the yoke could contaminate the fluid of the piece it is going into.

Ford makes a grease specifically for this - p/n XG8 I think.

It works really well and is pretty colored.

Sure, a little bit of grease may get into the oil, but I have never had a situation where there is so much grease in the oil that problems occur.

For the two piece shaft. As someone posted Ford has a special grease for that (IIRC its Krytox based) or you can use a higher moly grease like Schaeffers 238 or Redline CV-2 both with 5% moly.
Yoke to tranny ATF or Vaseline.

Try petrolatum. When it does get into the oil it won't cause a problem.

So Trav, would you be suggesting that the yokes and splines going into the tranny and transfer case would be lubed with tranny fluid instead of grease, and also around the outer shaft in contact with the seals?
Anything outside the transmission and transfer case gets greased?

I am trying to complete this job once and for all on Sunday, so I won't be able to make it to the dealer. I need a reliable product available from Autozone or Advanced. Is the mortorcraft product available on shelves, or is the CV 2 grease with molly available there that you know of?

Got the XG8 from the dealer today. Not quite what I was expecting, it was not greasy at all and was a really cool color as someone mentioned. Thanks for the recommendations.
