What kind of snakes are these?

Old NAVY friend of mine that’s born and raised in Maine spotted these snakes on his woods/property. Didn’t know what kind they are.

Garter snakes in my neck of the woods have always been black with longitudinal, yellow stripes.
If the depicted snakes are garters, I'm educated.
If they're not, you could be dead! jk

MParr: Thanks for the snake link. I had never heard details of the brown snake.
They're among the common constrictors aka 'good snakes'.

These are brown snakes a.k.a. DeKay's snakes. Garter snakes usually have a yellow dorsal stipe and yellowish stripes on the sides.
