So our internet used to be awesome. RR Turbo. We'd see 30mb/s burst, and sustained 18mb/s or so download, with ping <20ms. For about a week, it's been horrific. I've tried every combination of PC and router, etc. This is now the norm Everything downloads at less than 200KB/s for absolutely no reason. I've even swapped out the cable modem! It's really starting to tick me off. We are paying them a lot of money to get good speeds, and instead we are getting this crud. I already talked to them on the phone the other day, and I fully intend on calling and raising cane with them tomorrow, and make them send someone out. All they said was "It's fine according to what we see here...."

Huh sounds like what they told me also. Having to reset the cable modem every couple days now. It started about 2 years ago and was about every 2 months. They put it on a 24 hour watch even after I told them I was having to reset it every 2 days aka 48 hours. TWC started out good but seems like have to fight them for everything. Taking the modem to the store on Monday and I'm getting a new one regardless. May just go with ATT.

Did you guys ask them specifically if they are working on their network in any way?. You should ask this, sounds like some sort of work being done...

Root cause could be a "degraded" modem with loose internal connector to a cable leakage to ground, surprising the junk that slows speeds. Worth a service call from the "cable guy". Mine has been pretty good in that department. They even ran a new cable from a different pole, and man that improved speed greatly. Got a bunch of new net surfing neighbors?

The grounding and cable is a good thing to check. I had a ground block that wasn't working (I don't even know how that's possible) and replaced it, and everything's been good since. I had similar symptoms intermittently, requiring modem reboots, "manual grounding," and so forth.

All phone techs see is if your modem is connected to their network and "online." You need to have a tech come out to figure out if there is noise in your line or even on a larger scale.

Find your modems address, usually http://192.168.100.1/, and check your signal levels for any problems. Ideally you want signal leveks near 0. Anything -13 or greater can mean trouble for some modems. Ck status logs for reboots/signal losses.

We had a similar issue when we lived in some condos just north of town. The cable service was around 5-7mb then it slowly started going down. We finally had them send us another cable modem (Motorola brand) and that did the trick. Bo

With a TWC modem only they can access it. It's been tried. I do need to look at the grounding for mine as it doesn't have any!

nick, is it possible your bandwidth has been throttled? I love comcast broadband.

I get 256 ms ping to a server in Mumbai which is 8000 miles away. smile Granted, it's the number of hops that counts and not the actual distance.

I would start by doing a traceroute to someplace like google. See if the ping suddenly falls off a cliff somewhere. If its close, like the next one out after your router, it could be your connection or the immediate ISP router you are under. I'd suspect the connection though. Though, a few years back, I did this and it was 2 or 3 routers out from my computer. I called and told them that the router or the connection to the router at xx.xx.xxx.xxx was futzed up. They fixed it shortly though they didnt seem to have a clue how how I got that IP. They thought I was hacking. Funny since traceroute is included with Windows and these people are supposed to be working on a network?

I say its the modem . If its supportable get an ARRIS WBM760A instead of the cheap Motorol or RCA junk they try to push off on you.

If Verizon FIOS or Att Uverse is available in your area it is really the way to go. My FIOS costs about the same or slightly less than cable and has been VERY reliable. Way back when - years ago when I had DSL I had a similar problem and it was a noisy phone line.

I really do wish we had FiOS available here, but it isn't yet. I'd tell my parents to take it in a heartbeat, they are annoyed with TW for different reasons.
