I just saw surfstar's Topic: The AVERAGE OCI Thread and thought I'd be a lot more specific.

1) What year is your car?

2) Did you have sludge?

3) How long were your OCIs?

4) What oil were you using?

5) How did you get rid of the sludge?

6) What are you using now?

My answers:

1) I have a '99 Passat.

2) Enough to make me wonder why.

3) 8000 kms (5000 miles)

4) After 20,000 km on dealer Castrol GTX I switched to Castrol Syntec 5W-50. Currently has 135,000 km.

5) ARX. No apparent improvement.

6) GC?

Did the use of the Syntec 5W-50 cause any problems or sludge/varnish in your 1.8t?

1. '00 GTI

2. Nein!

3. 5-7k

4. have used the following:

Mobil 1 0W-40
GC 0W-30
Castrol GTX 5w30 dino
VW dealer bulk dino
Super-Tech 5w30 dino

5. N/A

6. GC 0w30 (back to M1 0w40 after this)

1) 02 Audi A4
2) No
3) 5k max
4) Mobil 1 0W-40
5) N/A
6) Mobil 1 0W-40 with 8oz LC at each oil change

1) What year is your car? 2001 B5 Passat

2) Did you have sludge? No

3) How long were your OCIs? unknown (bought car @ 115k now at 125k) Will be using 5000 km OCIs as my trips are generally 15 kms or less.

4) What oil were you using? Unknown

5) How did you get rid of the sludge? 2 dose Auto-RX process to be followed up by LC

6) What are you using now? After rinse phase I am putting in Amsoil 5w-40 with LC

Hey Yuk, nice to see another fellow edmontonian.

1)99 Audi A4 running about 300 hp w/90K miles
and 99 VW Passat w/~150K miles

2)No sludge in either.

3)I only go about 5K in the Audi, but for the VW 7500 to 10K.

4)I have used M1 10w30, 0w40, 5w40 and Redline 10w30 in the A4. I used M1 5w30 in the Passat for about 80K miles and have been using Rotella 5w40 for the past 70K.

5)NA, but I have run an ARx preventive treatment on both in the past.

6)M1 5w-40 in A4 and Rotella T 5w40 in the Passat.

Although this VW does not belong to me, I helped another user on Acurazine with his wife's VW.

1) The car was a 2001 Passat 1.8T

2) Don't know, even if it did, it probably was serious

3) 5K

4) Dealer Dino (at least the first 20K), LE Monolec 10w-30 (probably the last 20K; car currently has about 50K on it)

5) Car is currently going thru a single Auto-RX clean/rinse treatment.

6) After Auto-RX, car will be on a strict 5K OCI of M1 0w-40/LC.

1) What year is your car? 2002 Passat

2) Did you have sludge? No

3) How long were your OCIs? 5K miles

4) What oil were you using? Schaeffer's 5w30, unbelievably good UOAs. You can probably still find 'em here.

5) How did you get rid of the sludge? didn't have to

6) What are you using now? I just put in Schaeffer's Supreme 9000, 5w40. I'm trying a 7,500 OCI and of course I'll do a UOA of that.

BTW: I'm still using the older/smaller oil filter. I just got two of the now recommended larger filter.

1) What year is your car? '98 1.8T with Tip, 116k now.

2) Did you have sludge? Yes. Intermittent oil buzzer and finally loss of oil pressure at 98k or so. (I had made the mistake of having one of those hot flush treatments done and it dumped the coked sludge particles into the oil intake screen). I had to replace the turbo as well as it had spat out the bearings.

3) How long were your OCIs? 5K miles, but bought car at 70k, and pretty sure the previous owner used dino on 5k OCI with city driving.

4) What oil were you using? Unknown before 70k.

5) How did you get rid of the sludge? at 100k I pulled the pan, cleaned it (took several hours just to scrape and clean the pan of the baked on "coffee grounds"), replaced coked up oil pump. Ran Auto-RX to clean rest of engine and ringpacks. VERY effective and oil comes out very clean now even after 7.5k OCI. Oil consumption dropped dramatically after Auto-Rx to about 1/2 qt per 5k.

6) What are you using now? Used Valvoline Synpower 5-40 after Auto-Rx rinse, for 5k. Then Mobil 1 5w-30 for 7k, now Mobil 1 10w-30 Extended Performance and will do 10k OCI. Since doing the sludge cleanup I use the Napa 1333 Big Kahuna filter for added oil sump capacity and a maint dose of Auto-Rx with each oil change. I'm no longer worried at all about sludge formation. The last two drains the oil came out like medium colored honey and smelled good.

1. 2000 Golf 4-dr 1.8T (4spd auto)

2. NO (not that ive found anyway!)

3. 5000K miles and 6-7K miles with German Castrol (w/ UOA's)

4. Lubro-Moly 0w-40 (i really liked it and had 5litres for $10!); M1 0w-40 & 5w-40; Kendall GT-1 5w-40 (real PAO syn oil and would definetely use again!!); Belgian made Castrol Syntec 5w-40 (again I liked it but now it smells totally different and the new gold GC smells like the old 5w-40); GC and Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5w-40

5. I did use one treatment of Auto Rx at around 45K miles

6. I now use GC 0w-30 (gold coloured) and I have 80,000 miles on the engine.

Still runs like a champ and aside from the ton of probs I have when I got it (used with 30K miles) I have had 0 probs since (knock on wood!) I had a water pump replaced (and timing belt at same time)multiple sensors etc. I think I got to it (the engine) before the sludge got bad.

Although I have never had the oil pan off to see for myself but...at 125K miles I will to do a visual inspection etc. at 100K I will do the timing belt and replace the cam cover gasket(s) and let all know what the interior looks like. I have wished i could get a fiber optic snake to look inside the oil pan-that would be neato!!

I honestly don't know. Possibly, or maybe the sludge came from the dealer's use of the Castrol GTX. I did do one long oci, which accidentally went to 9500 km on 5W-50, but I don't know if one long oci is capable causing long-term sludge.
