What Exactly Is A "Crude Oil Engine" ??

I don't know about now, but in years past some ships with recip engines could burn crude oil, even some cases of off shore oil platforms with engines that burned it. The fuel is likely heated like bunker fuel and cleaned and filtered very well before use. I'd like to know if any of those oil platforms now use it for fuel?
