Back in the day it was the goto free Anti-Virus. I prefer Microsoft Security Essentials(essentially BigFoot Anti-Virus). It's free to download, light memory foot print and pretty non-invasive. It has detected a number of items when I go on a wild download tangent.

Or just google Microsoft Security Essentials, first URL in results.

Adding more info:

For a PAID alternative (just in case you want that info).

-Eset NOD32
-Kaspersky AV

I used to do company wide security deployments after initial testing (load, footprint and usage) those were the two that came out on top. Mind you this was back in 05/06. On tech forums these two are still considered the cream of the crop if you want to go the paid route.

AVG let a virus into my computer, and I wasn't even surfing porn, so I don't like it.

After some searching, switched to AVAST, which has been bulletproof (as well as having a "Talk like a Pirate" option.)

Our computers run with a combination of Avast and Spybot Search and Destroy.

Both are free.

I used to run Avast, it was good but slowed my computer down a pretty good bit. A fellow BITOG'er here told me about ESET NOD32, I removed Avast, installed ESET and have not looked back since. It is a great AV program, is very lightweight, doesn't slow down my computer yet it is very thorough and a very good AV system. You do not have to pay for it, there is a free version available on their web site. I use ESET and SuperAntiSpyware and have had no problems at all with either one. Both work great and both are free.

ESET is free for 30 days, right? After that you have to pay for it? ESET NOD32

After 30 days I get a message from ESET telling me to update it. All I have had to do is download and re-install the free version. I run ESET on 2 computers and so far I have not had to pay anything for it on either one.

ESET also sends me messages when it needs attention, like an update or if it finds something it wants me to see.

Can you post a link for the free version?

I used AVG on various relatives (incl. mother-in-law) and it crashed after a few scheduled AVG engine updates.

Gave up on that entirely and used Avast. Not a problem since.

Q.

I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials free from Microsoft for home use or a small business.

Change the time in Microsoft Security Essentials for update to a time that you may have the computer on.

Install the free Norton DNS too. Free for home use. Web site and info below.

I have had "decent luck" with the free antivirus programs (Avast, AVG and Microsoft Security) But I do love Norton Internet Security 2012 best. Free is good BUT YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!

Free software does a decent job for people that don't surf porn, bank, look at investments on Ameritrade or have kids that go to questionable sites. But my opinion is that if you ever do any of those things, pay for the good stuff and then you will get tech support if something does go wrong. (no support with any free versions)

Check out pcworld.com cnet.com pcmag.com and look at thier reviews of the latest tests.

I bought Norton Internet Security 2012 for 3 PCs for only $36.10 + free shipping from buy.com. Cheap insurance in my opinion

no support with webroot either thats why i got rid of it i think when you get rid of the paid anti virus programs they get [censored] and send viruses to your computer

Hmmm,it shows Avast #1 in detection rate.

AVG reads first (Windows XP) for the last test done. (2nd quarter 2011)

OK I didn't know we were talking about XP, I looked at the latest test and that's on Win 7.

Actually, even for Win 7 AVG free ranks first.

IMPORTANT: The products are listed in alphabetical order From A to Zed.

AVG free is the pits. Popups, wanting to install additional programs - uninstalled it and I now use MSE.
