I'm checking the fluid in the Jetta I got last year. (I know I should have dealt with this last year)

Anyway, it's orange, very clean and clear and regiters a little better than -35 f on a Prestone hydrometer. But I can only assume this is the right tool to measure the quality of the fluid.

So am I good to go? Or should I flush? Or is there a different tool to check with for the fluid I have?

That`s what I plan on doing.........draining my radiator (it has a drain plug to do just that under the car........really easy access) and adding some fresh water/coolant/Purple Ice to keep it fresh.

It's an 03. But the factory VW coolant is pink. So I know it's been changed, I just don't know when.

I'm also trying to find out if the hydrometer I'm using is the right tool for the coolant I have.

The dealer I bought it from is very good about making sure everything is up to snuff b4 they sell a car. I'll call them tommorrow to see if flushing and filling is standard procedure.

Otherwise I have a gallon of Amsoil coolant ready to go. But why use it if I don't need it.

Valvoline put different shades of gold dye in their different label of G-05...Ford's label, Chrysler's label, and Zerex's label.

Dex-Cool is an orange dye, and some of the so-called universal antifreezes have a similar dye.

The smart thing is to flush completely and refill with a suitable antifreeze.

Valvoline/Zerex recommends Dex-Cool in VWs after '96. Or flush and use VW branded antifreeze.

Mixing DexCool with non-dexcool antifreeze in my experience (clogged heater core) and others can lead to bad results.. I would drain a out as much as possible and refill in in another week or so.
