Seems like there are at least three ways of measureing oil filters: flow, filtering ability, and construcion of the filter. Considering those three things, what would be your top two filters?

1) Wix and all their clones (Napa Gold/Carquest Premium). They have the best bypass valve setup IMO and a silicon ADBV, plus they have a coil spring holding everything together instead of a leaf spring.

2) Purolators

These seem to be the best "commonly available" filters. Baldwin and hastings are also excellent, but I can't seem to find them in retail stores anywhere, except online

..I am using Purolaters right now and like em'...will go to Wix if my looser Napa dealer ever gets the gold series in soon...has the silver but I'll use the Purolaters till he gets the gold.

pur1's and wix's do it for me too. (available 5 minutes away)

i might be inclined to try a baldwin or hastings but the nearest dealer is 75 miles away.

walmart's stock of supertechs is amazingly so low that i can never find the correct filter for my applications, else i would try a supertech.

i wouldnt mind using a motorcraft or delco but i cant find them within driving distance, and for under $5.

Inasmuch as the higher flow translates to more filtering per miles/time should take advantage of the multi-pass specs/claims.

There fore my top two would be Supertech or equivalent and K&N in no particular order.

Anyone that has read many of my posts knows I like the AC's. My fall back position when I can't them are ST's. Advance Auto wants as much for Purolators as AC's that look better to me. Availablity is an issue. Order off the net and the shipping kills you on inexpensive things like oil filters.

PureOne then OEM.

However I reserve the right to change my mind.

Bob's filter flow tests still pending.

And Bob's anecdotal evidence with his Escort using Schaeffer's and various oil filters seems to indicate lower restriction gives better wear numbers.

If we can just get Bob to try the 15w-40 Supreme with a Fram on a <5k run. Hard to have complete confidence in those Mobil 1 filtered runs with him running the dog out of that first sample along with the mega Neutra treatments prior to sampling.

I have tried almost all of the major brands of filters and have never had a problem with any brand of filter. My daily driver I use the cheapest filter money can buy Walmart ST filter $1.67. Lately I have been thinking that the filter is not that big of a deal in my applications. For day to day usuage the oil filter should be doing very little. I do not have sludged up engines and my air element is working fine. My filter is their to protect from engine from a catastophic part failure and heavy breakin wear. It might also help lower insoulables if extended drains are practiced. If extra filtering is needed I think I would use a stand alone bypass system that is totaly seperated from the full flow side!!! I actualy ordered OEM filters for my new car. I think that for the money you get you best buy with Baldwin. THe only filter I am hesitant to use is Fram!

1) Ultraguard Gold
2) Ultraguard Gold

It's the only thing I'm going to be using from now on, and if they discontinue it again I will cry and cry. Then I will buy out GMPartsdirect.com's remaining stock.

I used to use the PureONE's but they had alot of startup chatter on my GM 3.1L. The Ultraguard is a big improvement.

fram is # 1.

yea right haha. right now i run a baldwin filter...2157 miles into it my oil light stays on alot longer during start ups...i bet its really filtering.

i used to use a supertech but i cannot take that filter off easy.

right now:
purolator
baldwin
donaldson (pending)

When it comes to Purolator oil filters, the bad thing is you can't get the silicon adbv on the PremiumPlus. Otherwise, I like the PremiumPlus better than the PureOne. I think the PureOne is too restrictive.

I like the PUREONE and Wix also. I am using an oversized PUREONE filter so I don't believe restriction will be a problem. Filter is four time larger than standard or OEM.

Previous to yesterday's oil change I used a Pure One filter then bought a Napa (Wix) Gold to try. It appears that the Napa filter has a smaller diameter than the Pure One filter. Does this in any way affect anything (performance of the filter, capacity, etc.)? Just curious. Other than that both filters are great and I would highly recommend them.
