It was time for an oil change and the weather has been very cold here as of late,so decided to go with a 5W oil...with all the talk about SUV oil and Delvac being the same... in the weight I'm looking for....went out and bought some...wasn't cheap...two 4 litre jugs cost me $80 after taxes..Jeep 4.0L needs around 5.7L to fill it...hope everything works out ok with this stuff...allways used just Mobil 1 and liked it

What grade of Mobil 1 have you used in the past?

I run Mobil Delvac 1 5W-40 in my commercial equipment, and used to run it in my personal cars. The Delvac 1 will provide superior wear protection and extended oil drains over even Mobil 1.

That said, us folks in Ontario have experienced a nice "old fashioned" winter. Very, very cold. The new Delvac 1, reformulated for CI-4, appears to be quite a bit thicker than the old Delvac 1.

The old Delvac 1 had a rated MRV BPT of -44 C. Mobil no longer publishes the specs on their oils, but the "pour point" is now -44 C. I would imagine the MRV BPT around -38 C.

So if you're already worried about cold temp performance, or have had some issues, Delvac 1 will not help you. Mobil 1 5W-30 would be a much better bet.

I have a 2000 GMC Sierra with Vortec 5.3 and I run Mobil 1 0W-30 in winter and Mobil 1 10W-30 in summer. This summer I'm planning on trying the new Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5W-40, essentially a rebranded Delvac 1.

If you're worried about cold temps, and can't find Mobil 1 0W-30, try Esso XD-3 0W-30. This is a PAO Heavy Duty Diesel oil. You can find it at any Esso Bulk dealer.

I was using Mobil 1 10W-30 with an oversized Wix filter all year in my 2001 Jeep.Seems that even with a block heater plugged in there are a few "funny" noises on cold mornings for a few seconds. So I decided to go with a 5W oil till the spring warm-up.I choose the Delvac in 5W-40 due to the discussions on this board about this oil being pretty good.I'd even use it year round if it seems to be a better oil..cost isn't all that important...but if I'm wasting money by purchasing the Delvac than I'll go back to the regular Mobil

I think you made a good decision. The Jeep does very well with a X-40 oil. The SUV does appear to be the same as Delvac 1. There was a UOA with a Jeep running D1 and it looked very good. Keeps the engine very clean too. It's good stuff. You could maybe run a 5w-30 in the winter and then a 5w-40 in the summer months. The 5w-40 should be good all year round though.

Thats what I figured...the 4.0L motor does like a thicker weight in hot weather for sure.. so the 40W in the Delvac will do great here. But lately the cold near zero temps have made warm-up at work (no plug in for my block heater)a bit noisy for a few seconds so I figured the 5W in the Delvac will help out here.Everyone on this board seems to think the Delvac is pretty good so I'll try it out and post back my results later on this week.
