I got pulled out of the shop to haul some cement blocks. Got 605 hp and 18 gears!

How do you get 18 gears out of a Eaton/Fuller 8 speed? Unless there’s a splitter button I can’t see? Is the engine a X15 Cummins?

Decades ago Cummins made some huge engine I think is was called the KTA That was offered in 450 or 600 HP . I drove the 450 horse power one for 3 days it was something I remembered. The power was scary compared to the 350 hp Cummins etc of the time.

I used to spec our highway tractors, last batch were 2015 Volvos with the 13 L, 425hp, 1650 ft lb of torque, iShift transmission.
100 tractors in the fleet.
We would run 2 x 53' trailers, up to 146000 lbs GCVW, with that spec. Handled the weight fine. Could it go 60 mph up a 6% grade, no, but that's not what hauling commercial is about.
Imo.

These guys only have this one tractor. It's a heavy haul and is mainly used for hauling huge machines on trailers with many wheels.

It's so heavy that with a regular trailer we can only put 40k lbs on it.

Tonight I got stuck in a freeway closure for 5 hrs and could not move.

FWIW. there a re lot's of YouTube videos out there showing how to shift an 18 speed E/F transmission. Most drivers don't use Lo, and most don't split the bottom gears, just the top.

Just my $0.02

When I drove for a living I hated the tractor with the 18 speed. Much prefered the 10 speed.

Well that's my contribution :p

We have a Volvo at work, single axle with a 405HP D13 and autoshift. It's horrible. The transmission programmer should be shot for incompetence. The driver has zero control, and the trans lugs the engine horribly.

Had similar concerns with the driver pool that had and International Prostar Cummins ISX and 10 speeds, going to a Volvo D13 with iShift.
There is a manual over ride option available on the iShift. It's a spec thing.
Also, the newer Class 8 engines are designed for peak torque at 1000 - 1200 RPMs.
Totally different than the 1500 - 1800 rpm of past.

Helping the drivers understand and use the newest truck technology was interesting.
