Weatherstrip/trim adhesive

My Sienna keeps having the door strip fall off. There's an adhesive already but it's not cured... it's almost like a thick grease. I don't know if this is OEM adhesive or something somebody else tried, but either way it's going to be a problem for getting it reattached. I'm thinking I need to clean as much of the old glue as I can, then apply new glue but it will have to be compatible. Does anyone know if there's a special Toyota adhesive for this?

True weatherstripping adhesive is incredibly tacky and sturdy. I wonder if the glue/grease there is more of a silicone caulk or an attempt to lubricate the rubber. But - a lot of weatherstripping today doesn’t use adhesive, but has little plastic snaps that clip it into the surrounding metal every six inches or so. Does that weatherstripping attach originally via a clip or glue?

I don't know the answer. This stuff is more like tar. Next time it falls down I will try to clean it out with solvent. It's in good shape otherwise.

Another option is the permanent double side tape that you can use to attach exterior chrome strips and such. That stuff is tenacious but I would consider it a last resort.

I'd use the yellow 3m weatherstrip adhesive. Brush on let it tack up and press the rubber on.

As for the OEM stuff, good luck cleaning it, you're gonna make a huge mess with solvent since it will soften and smear everywhere.

I've had good luck with Permatex Weatherstrip adhesive. Apply it to both surfaces, wait a couple of minutes, push them together.. done! and yes I've used it on my Toyota (Scion).

That's not an adhesive, it's some type of grease or paste, presumably to make the seal installation easier at the factory and maybe provide moisture barrier.
I noticed the exact same goop under the rear hatch seal, when I was installing my rear dash cam. Interestingly enough, the door seals didn't have this goop on, only the hatch seal had it applied.
