i went though your same situation 2 years ago. I spoke with 4 different plumbers and, or course, got 4 different answers.
here are the reasons against.
they are not very common yet so when they break it could be awhile before you get parts to fix it.
some units must be sent back to the factory for warranty repairs.
because they are not very common, many plumbers don't know how to fix them.
there is only so much "tempeture rise" the unit can handle, if your ground water is really cold a single unit might not be able to heat up the water quickly enough. in that case you would need 2 units or a solar water heater to preheat the water. that would negate any savings on gas.
new regualar water heaters are more effecient than they used to be, the difference in energy consumption is not enough to justify the cost difference.
they are quite a bit more expensive for a good one.
a fair amount of replumbing and reducting must be done. they require a much larger amount of gas when they are running. they also require special exhaust ducting.

here are the reasons for;
energy savings because you are not always heating water.
they are small.
high gadget factor
they are the future of water heating
if you buy a nice unit like a rennai you can install point of use water temp adjustment panels. that means if you like your shower at 103* you dial in 103 and the water heater only puts out 103* water, saving energy because you are no longer blending hot water and cold water.

one plumber's recommendation was "when your new tank water heater wears out, tankless water heaters will be common and everyone will sell and work on them, install one then." he was a certified installer/repairman for one of the major brands of tankless water heaters.

I was told that a bosch aquastar is a pretty small unit and not really ment for more than an apartment although they market them for houses. Rennai was highly recommended.


I really wanted a tankless, but ended up with a regular water heater. the cost, repairability, and availability were the deciding factors.
 
I'm contemplating replacing my 10 year old water heater for a more efficient model. I presently have a 40 gallon natural gas and with a little one on the way may upgrade to a 50-55 gallon. I'm also investigating tankless water heaters. Does anyone have experience with those?
 
Must be day of the water heater. I've replaced a few. Get at least a 50 gallon. Easy but frustrating job - if you need to go back to the store for a fitting. The new nice ones are pretty heavy (good thing I guess) Strap that sucker in place (code here)

I have many good things about tankless heaters. I think it would be cool to have several - each close to the needed source of HW. The Renai (sp?) is advertised like the cureall on Paul Harvey....fwiw.
 
Our local code requires the TPR to be plumbed to within 4" of the floor. My water heater has a metal pan with 3" sides and a hose going to a drain just in case.
 
At our 1 year old office we've got a demand boiler/water heater.. the thing is only 24" X 18" X 8".. it's tiny... the building stays plenty warm in the winter (unless someone leaves the 14X14 door open) and hot water hasn't been a problem at all. *but*, we really don't use that much water at all.
 
This is a great topic. I currently have some new home plans out for bid by a builder. I'm very interested in anything I can do to cut my monthly utility bills. I hope to be in the house 10+ years so I should get a payback on upgrades. I'm planning to go behind the workers and make sure all exterior walls are properly sealed for air, low-e windows, properly sized Seer 13/14 heat pumps, etc. I'm very interested in the electric tankless water heaters. I'm located in the country and no NG available and I don't think I want to be tied to fluctuating Propane costs. Is there any particular code as to where you can install these tankless heaters? I have some closets near the bathrooms that should provide enough space to put one or more. I'm thinking about one mult-appliance model for master bath & laundry, and one for kids bath and kitchen.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I imagine that for tankless water heaters electric is ideal -- smaller element, no exhaust, easier wiring (than piping gas).

With today's utility gas prices does an ordinary electric water heater cost less to operate than an ordinary gas water heater?

Any difference in long term reliability?

No way, at least not in my area. Gas is still way cheaper to heat water than electric.

As for longevity - electric water heaters last a LONG time, but do need new elements from time to time.
 
electricity is not nearly as effecient as gas for making heat. if you look up the "recovery" specs on water heaters a 40 gallon gas water heater will put out more hot water per hour than a 50-60 gallon electric.
my house used to be all electric including heat. my electric bills were $120+ year round. after installing gas appliances my electricity bill is less than $30 a month and my gas bill is about $35 a month. the payback just for switching to gas is pretty quick.

That's pretty much my experiance.

Most electrical power is generated by burning fossil fuel. The fossil fuel to electricy conversion is lot less efficient that the natural gas to hot water conversion. Then you need to subtract transmission losses from the electrical power efficinecy.

If Pablo says electricl hot water is more expensive in the Pacific NW (Land of cheap hydroelectric power), then it's lot more expensive in the rest of the contry.

Our electrons used to be cheaper but that was more than 15-20 years ago, plus all the growth.....has put our power as high or higher than most. There are a lot of older all electric houses....you can buy the house and retrofit - but even those houses are expensve now!
