Hi guys. I love

Castrol Syntec, but I have an open

mind and have been reading in here that Amsoil is better because it isn't GIII.

What is Amsoil's formulation considered? Would I be going in the right direction here? ------------------------->

PS. Please someone convince

me not to use Zmax again when I do make my change. I don't know. I just love that stuff, even with all the bad stuff I have read, it seems to work. Hmmmmm.

I desperately want to try a new oil. Spare no expense is what I say!

Instead of Z-Max you could use bleach. Same stuff and bleach is cheaper.

You might want to pick an oil and use it, straight up with no additives. If you choose Syntec you might want to know that the people that designed Syntec may have never met the people that designed Z-Max. This is one introduction you don't want to make in your engine. There's three chances here. It will do something good, nothing or do some damage. With odds of one in three, at your expense, it's a bad bet.

I'm an Amsoil fan but the Castrol stuff is pretty darn good. Amsoil and Mobil 1 are group IV oils and the Syntec is Group III. If you like the way the Syntec works for you keep on running it, I'm sure it's a good oil.

You should not have to dope up any of the name brand oils on the market. Just good clean oil should be the best.

The Amsoil XL's are hydrocracked, similar to Castrol Syntec. The others are PAO formulated with varying additive packages, depending on the application. You might want to refer to the company's website.

If you have a PepBoys around there stop in and grab one of the $1 calendars and use the coupon for the buy 3 get 3 free Mobil 1. Half price for a chance to see if you like it. If you don't then you're not out a whole lot of cash.

BTB,

Amsoils best and most fuel efficient formula is their Series 2000, 0w-30. Given the cost of gas in CA, that's what I'd use, period. I recommend a 15,000 mile/1 year service interval, with the Amsoil "Super Duty" filter changed @ 7500 miles/6 months. The Mobil 1 oil filters are also excellent if you'd like to use those....

I think you'll find this formulation provides the best fuel efficiency you've ever achieved in this motor. Compared to running a 5w-30/10w-30 conventional lube, my customers consistently report fuel savings of 3%-5%. Wear protection is at least as good as the Amsoil 10w-30, even in turbo applications. Oil consumption is actually lower than with the Amsoil 5w-30 and 10w-30.

Please call if you have specific technical and/or applications questions. I get too many emails to respond very fast....

Actually, I got some great mpg out of the Syntec 10W-30. I think it goes to near 20wt. quickly by design. I stopped using it (right or wrong) for that reason. I decided to go with a more robust syn that will stay solid in the 30 wt. range.

Dear friends,
Ok so here is the deal. I probably have an oil change coming up here shortly

and I have given some thought as to what I will use. I thought about using Amsoil, but since I read that some of there oil is Group3, I will just stick with Syntec 10w-30, and use a little of that new engine additive from GM called EOS Assembly Lube that has the high levels of zinc and other important protective elements.

What do you guys think here? I felt that since you all swear I should stop using my favorite chemical Zmax, that if I do inlcude the new oil additive, it will give my engine some protection from the supposed corrosive properties of Zmax.
Is this a good idea? Let me know.

Haley10...what oil did yu end up going with to get that heavier feeling?

Thanks

The XL line of Amsoil is a Group III the rest is Group IV unless it is a blend. E.O.S. is great to assemble a motor with and some added to the oil for the initial run in of the cam. Adding it as an additive to run all the time will surely distroy your convertor. The oils you are talking about using do not need anything added to them to reduce wear.

Do not run the EOS. Like KW said just run the oil the way it is. You do not want to play chemist with the oil.
The oil is going to work best straight out of the bottle.
You got to trust the oil man...............
Good luck!

Actually I think the Amsoil XL line is a GP-III/Ester instead of a PAO/Ester. I believe you still need some ester even with a GP-III to balance out the seal swell properties, provide solubility for additives and contribute some AW properties and solvency to the base stock.

This would be true of other GP-III based synthetics as well, like Castrol Syntec and Valvoline Synpower....
