Want to install a Qwik Valve AFTER new oil change

Hi guys, I searched for some answers regarding this but didn't find anything related. I JUST changed my oil using Mobil 1 10w30 Extended Performance and their EP filter. I am planning to change the oil once a year, which should be about 13k miles. I plan on getting the oil tested at about 7 to 8 k miles. I have a few questions:

INFO: I have a 2003 Saleen Mustang S281 (N/A) with 83k miles. I drive this car to work (mostly freeway miles) and do not track or drag race the car. Also, Ford specs 5w20 for this engine but Saleen specs 5w30.

1. Should I wait longer (more miles) to test so that I'll have a better idea of how long I should leave the oil in?

2. To install the new Quik Valve, would it be okay for me to drain out all of the fresh oil, install the valve and fill it back up with the same oil? I need a new drain pan anyway and plan on getting something like this: I ask because I am about 1% concerned that something in the pan could impact the UOA. I planned on at least cleaning the pan out with soap and water (just shake it up then rinse it out).

3. Initially I planned to do the yearly changes right before the beginning of the scorching Phoenix summers but I can see good arguments for doing it either before the summer or after it's over. Thoughts?

4. I was torn between 5w30 and 10w30 but since it's so hot here and I pretty much never drive this car to cold places (worst-case cold start temp in a Phoenix garage might be 35 to 40 or so degrees F) I chose 10w30. I'm guessing I'm losing some amount of gas mileage but we're probably talking less than 2%.

Thanks

PS: what a great forum BITOG is for us car nerds.

About 2, install the drain plug at mid-OCI UOA time, and do a "clean catch" of oil from the stream coming out of the engine before it hits the plastic pan.

I think we're alike, we know something "shouldn't matter" but get all OCD about it anyway... which means you'll fit right in here.

I'd just put the quick drain in your glove box and change it out on the next change. I wouldnt try to drain and then put the oil back in due to any foriegn contaminents getting in it from the containers.

Brilliant. I'd like to think I would have thought of this as I was preparing to install the valve but you never know. Thanks.

You're referring to negatively affecting the UOA, right? I'd bet a thousand bucks any chemicals (however major or minor) that might bleed out from the plastic while sitting for a few minutes wouldn't impact or reduce the effectiveness of the oil once it's back in the engine... just possibly the UOA.

To clarify, I was originally talking about installing the valve in the next week or two but would still need to wait 10k more miles before my UOA. Then at 10k miles and using the quik valve: put car on stands, open valve, fill container, close valve. However, now I'm thinking of installing the valve at UOA time.

Just the thought of clean oil changes and easy getting UOA samples so easily makes me smile.

Welcome to BITOG. Welcome to the land of many thoughts and some good ideas. Personally I would wait until 10k miles on your current fill. Then I would drain it out, put on your valve, and put in a new fill of oil. I would not bother with the cost of a UOA. I would simply use that cash to change the oil a little earlier and not worry about it unless you just happen to want to look for some type wear in engine. That is my 2 cents worth. Enjoy the reading.

No I'm not talking about the "chemicals that might bleed from the plastic", I'm talking about any other dirt/trash/whatever that can be in any containers even if you wipe them down (whehter you do a UOA or not I like to open the motor up as sparingly as possible). Not to mention a waste of time.

But, go ahead and change your oil after you just changed your oil to make it easier to change your oil next time if it will really drive you nuts.

+1 I'd be more concerned with dirt getting into the oil, not worth the hassle. If you want to send a UOA off at some point during this OCI get the sample from the dipstick tube.
