It seems to be a way for VW to gage US response. Many more Americans would want this over the Golf R whereas many more VW Enthusiasts would take a Golf R, hands down (IMO).

I see enough BMW, Mercedes and Audi sport model SUVs that there is probably a market for this if it beats them by 15k or so. Then again the Touareg did exactly that in the more mainstream flavors and was not exactly a sales sensation. I don't think they really intended it to be though.
