VW appears to have changed to a metal water pump on the 1.5TSI

Was poking around the engine bay of the Taos this afternoon and noticed that the water pump/t-stat housing is metal now on the 1.5TSI- all previous variants of the EA211 were plastic. Interesting, they also switched to a metal Timing belt cover. Guess they finally got fed up with plastic water pump failures? It was also interesting the variety of countries the parts are from, plenty of stuff made in Germany (lots of sensors, connectors, hoses), USA (AC Compressor, ABS actuator, ignition coils)), Poland (Brake reservoir, although the booster itself was Mexican made) and throttle body. Turbo, cooling fans, and a ton of other stuff was Mexican made, the timing belt cover was Italian made, Slovakia... The torsion beam in the rear was made in Germany. It's interesting to see just how many countries VW sources parts from compared to say, Ford (almost everything I see on Fords are Mexican made)

Well that's good to hear...plastic in the modern motor vehicles has been my biggest moan this century. Cars are full of it, even the so earth friendly electric vehicles. We take failed plastic parts off cars every day, and where does it go ? We don't have a guy in a truck coming around saying ''Got any scrap plastic, we pay good money.'' No, we chuck it in the bin and it goes to landfill.

At least the ally water pump will hopefully be recycled.

Possible but the impellers were never the problem with VW water pumps I believe, it was the housings cracking or warping and leaking.
Impellers would sometimes come loose and no longer be driven by the shaft. Sometimes blades broke off and bits and pieces got into cooling passages.

In my 30 years of owning vehicles including Honda, Acura , Subaru and skipping replacing a water pump during timing belt changes I have yet to see a failure with some vehicles run to 225k/14yr stage.

Wife has a 112k 2018 VW Tiguan so maybe the streak will end….

Fortunately neither the EA211 or EA888 require the timing cover to be pulled to replace it, but I wouldn't say they are easy to get to either.
