VSV struts?

Took our '03 CRV to the local shop to confirm what I thought (blown strut). They are going to install VSV struts? never heard of them, quick look didn't indicate that they are junky (and at this price they better not be!). Curious as to actual quality.

[I tried and couldn't R&R the strut, tie rod got the better of me. Some jobs I'm better off letting a shop do, and this appears to be one of them--especially since I wrecked my last car while working on it.]

Well, I know the shop has to add to the price some sort of markup, I get that. Still way past what I'd pay on Rock for KYB. But I didn't ask about any warranty on it, guessing standard 12month/12k. Labor isn't bad, $250 to do both sides is pretty reasonable I think--but each strut is near that. Ouch!

Reminds me that I've been putting off ordering struts for my other car... why do things have to wear out?
