For the later model Volvos, which all have the same 4 cylinder engine, the oil filter has been redesigned. Same concept as before, a cartridge inside of a polymer canister, but this one has o-rings built into the filter and the filter housing has a drain plug a la Toyota.
Here is the filter:
Here is the housing, with the small drain plug seen as a silver, 6mm hex key insert.
Our new XC90 has 5,285 miles on the odometer. What is unknown is for how many of those miles the gasoline engine was in operation. It is operated primarily in BEV mode, and charged at home. My rough guess is that the gasoline engine has about 1,000 miles on it, nearly all of which were highway miles back and forth to Disney a few months back.
Volvo’s service interval is 1 year/10,000 miles. Likely this engine would have about 2,000 miles on it by the service interval, but I wanted to change the oil to ensure that the break in debris was removed.
So, first oil change: Genuine Volvo filter, 6 quarts of Mobil 1 EP 0W20. Some “sparklies” seen in the oil. Camera didn’t pick them up, but you could see the light reflecting in the oil. Minute bits of metal, I reckon. Break in remains.
I cut the filter. It is sturdy, and has a lot of pleats.
Zooming in on the filter media, most of the pleats were clean, but a few had the bits in them, so, overall, very little debris in the filter, but I did see a few tiny bits of red material, likely anaerobic sealant from manufacturing, and very few tiny metal bits.
Still, given the “sparklies”, I am glad that I changed it early.
