Ah yes, Walmart.

Using the country's infrastructure to build their massive empire while exploiting their workers - relying on the the taxpayers to subsidize their pay with government benefits. And people just eat it up because they can get their Chinese crap for cheap.

I think I'll go to Walmart and steal some steaks on principle.
Nothing could be further than the truth.

Sadly things have to be locked up now by all retailers including Best Buy, Target you name it.
This is a product of people tolerating the police not responding to petty theft‘s. Moving into the future we are all going to see this is a big mistake. It’s quality of life issues and once you start tolerating the small stuff it will just keep growing and growing.
It already has in some states.

Very soon we will have a lot of stores being membership only and the bulk of sales would be big items that are hard to steal, and if you do steal you would be caught because it is a membership store.

No credit card? You better have some sort of electronic payment because they don't want to deal with cash and their security cost. Want small items locally? There's a 7-11 2.0 next door, or you can order online and get it tomorrow if it is too expensive and you can wait 1 day.
If you're going to steal, you don't need to be a member to get in. The BJs here doesn't check membership at the door and you can get into a Costco with just a gift card and even if you have a membership, they don't actually track it until you check out. If you don't check out, then they don't know who was actually in the store.

Also some states ban not taking cash. I think some stores in my state tried that and the state attorney general shut that down and told them they had to take cash.

Cash?
Ohhh that stuff getting moldy in my wallet🙃 I really really strive to remember the last time I’ve used cash. Whenever that time was, was to simply leave a waitress a cash tip instead of putting it on the charge card. This gives her the option to share it or not.

With that said cash will never go away and you are correct I don’t know where a store can legally ban cash.
It could be looked upon as a form of discrimination and if somebody hasn’t thought about that yet you can bet they will!!!

And all of that relied on the honor system that we were taught right from the beginning and all the way through life. Somewhere along the way that stopped.
Never trust any honor system in my life. Humanity will always try to cheat as long as the reward is big and people can get away with them (loophole lawsuit or they already lost everything you can punish them for).

Which is why the item size in Costco is so BIG. You won't see a small item that can fit in your pocket, you need to put it on a huge cart. People cannot steal efficiently as you would be stuck in the parking lot trying to get out if you try to run.

Can you virtue signal any harder?

Around here we have a restaurant called Sweet Green banning cash, I think they got some criticism but eventually the message is they just make it hard to pay with cash, and they target an audience that won't do much with cash anyways.

Maybe they will accept cash but no change, maybe they will only accept a small amount and don't make change, maybe they won't accept above $20 bill like many stores and gas stations. Maybe you need to wait for the manager to show up so you will need to wait at the customer service, who knows.

Point is, retails are focusing on those who have money and those who have money will likely not use cash these days. They just don't want to deal with cash.

Amazon is well on that way - as soon as Go comes to Whole Foods, game over. And Amazon is willing to get others use it(it’s also revenue for AWS). Walmart and the dollar stores will fight for the crumbs.
As a business Whole Foods will likely not be ever mainstream, they target high end customers with high end prices and not the mass market like Walmart, Safeway, etc where the main volume is. I do see prime being extended to deliver food items but they need to follow more of a Trader Joe's model (sell for a very good price for selected item) than Whole Foods (sell unique exotic stuff at unique exotic prices). Last I understand from blind the Go and Whole Food teams are dumpster fire.

I do see Costco extending from commercial delivery to high end customer delivery, and Prime extending into shelf-stable food stuff and compete with Go and Whole Foods.

More restaurants and c-stores are ordering from Restaurant Depot - and US Foods(formerly US Foodservice, the 2nd largest foodservice distributor in the US behind Sysco with many national/chain accounts) bought out the cash & carry division of Smart & Final(Smart Foodservice), ostensibly to compete against Restaurant Depot. Amazon is wanting those EBT dollars - they recently announced a half-priced Prime tier for EBT/SNAP/SSI recipients(and MetroPCS has Prime bundled on some plans) - and Whole Foods has been taking EBT recently.

Costco has become a luxury brand. Not as high-end as Whole Foods but the Lexus and lululemon crowd loves it. Restaurant owners don’t need to see Traeger grill/scuba gear/Vitamix demos - they want to be in and out and stock their eateries. Restaurant Depot has been on a roll lately. Yes, I know Costco has the business center - but they only exist in Hayward/South San Francisco/LA(I’m guessing City of Industry/Long Beach/Irvine) but they don’t carry the same stuff as RD does.

Also, Safeway and Whole Foods are almost the same price-wise, IMO. Amazon’s strategy with Whole Foods is to build one near a Safeway - or remodel an existing store if there is a Safeway or a “high-end” grocer nearby.

I accidentally posted video with cuss word.

Im sure Walmart is getting killed with so much shoplifting, especially in the cosmetics area.
You know, speaking of that, what two stores haven’t been ransacked for expensive makeup and skincare? Sephora and Ulta. More so Sephora at JCPenney/Kohl’s and Ulta at Target.

While I do have my bougie salad at sweetgreen every now and then at work(Oakland and SF), it infuriates me they don’t take Apple Pay. Only their app. Even Mixt Greens takes Apple Pay.

High end restaurants by me cash only. The demand is so high they don't need to share the profit with American express

There are always those who try to game the system. I suspect you are younger than me. There was a time when doors were held open and people picked up a wallet that you dropped and gave it back to you. There was a time when 95% of people were helpful and considerate with 5% being the opposite. My view is that those numbers have flip flopped.

Kroger is the same. They are pushing their own app. I just use my Apple Card

I am old enough to know back then isn't any better than now. I know a lot more nicer people doing nicer things now than before, maybe because you cannot find a wallet worth picking these days, maybe people are richer now than before, I don't know.
