Yo guys, my dear 88 year old mother drives her car less than 2k miles per year, mostly short trips. It's a 92 T-Bird with the 3.8 V6. The car has about 40k on the clock and spends most of it's life in a closed garage. Right now, last time I changed her oil I put in M1 T&SUV. At 2k/year, how long can I let this go? I was thinking of one year OCI. Can I go 2 years? What are the major issues with such low annual mileage? Thanks.

My mom doesn't drive very much, less than 4k per year, mostly short trips too, and I recently got back a UOA of GC 0w30 in her car which was in there for almost two years (and just under 8k) and the report showed the oil could've gone even longer!

I've read here of people going 2 yrs with low mileage such as your situation with apparently good results. It may have been the case that it was a vehicle that was garaged, in a mild climate, and the vehicle was taken on very few short trips. Predominantly short trips would be my major concern. If it was taken out at least once a month for a 30 mile trip, that would probably suffice, assuming it's mechanically sound, PCV is working properly, etc.

On a strictly practical side of things, it is a 92 T-Bird and your Mother is 88. 20K more miles will get you 10 years, you get my drift.

But if it was my Mother, the expense and time for yearly OCI would not be too much to ask of a son. I hope someone is around more often to check other fluids, belts, tires, and such.

Yes, I do check the tires, belts, radiator, etc.... every time I visit her, which is about every couple of months.

Her driving is getting to be a bit, well, iffy. If you know what I mean. The good thing is that she realizes it. She has decided not to renew her drivers license next time it expires. Yeah, 88 is up there, something could happen at any time, we all know that. She has a pacemaker, so hopefully that will give her a few more years. I'll probably end up inheriting a very low mileage 92 T-Bird in a few years. I'll likely sell it to a museum.

In the meantime, If I were to do yearly OCIs, I'll probably switch to less expensive Mobil 7500 in lieu of M1. Since the M1 doesn't hardly get used in the intervals. Stay with the Wix filter of course.
