For those who don't know: I'm an auto mechanic by trade and been the family's exclusive mechanic for over 20 years. Last year I moved a little over an hour away, making emergency repairs impossible and basic repairs inconvenient.

My mother owns a very well taken care of but higher mileage 2010 Mazda6, and after playing the "what weekend are you free" game on a few repairs she decided she needed to find a local shop to trust. To keep things short, I think she found a winner in Turbo Tim's.

Earlier this afternoon, she sent me a digital report that the shop gave her after the car left her stranded yesterday: battery weak, but still testing good after charging and a recorded starter draw of 355 amps against a max spec of 250. They also included a video of the tech physically testing the battery with an old-school carbon pile tester to verify his findings.

Not only were they completely transparent and didn't try to up-sell her on a single thing, they PAID for her Lyft home! I gave her the go-ahead to have them complete the work with confidence.

Did they tell you where the excessive current draw was coming from?

There was no reported draw, at least not that I saw. Their recommendation for a starter was based on excessive current pull combined with a weakening battery which led to her no-start. The car sits a decent amount as she works from home most days, which doesn't help battery life.

Understood.

Count your self extremely lucky. You have discovered a unicorn car shop. Around my town I do not have any shop I completely trust.

I couldn't agree more. Allowing someone else to service our vehicles, ESPECIALLY my parent's vehicles, is extremely difficult for me.

Luckily, dad just took delivery of a '24 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid so I'm off the hook for a while there.

Thus shop has been listed numerous times on Reddit, when users are asking for a reliable shop in this area.

I got the final bill for the new battery and starter, including diag. tax and shop supplies: $615.06. All things considered, I'm happy with that total.
