How terribly has Venice beach gone down the tubes???

Now, I've only been there twice, including tonight. The first time was maybe 5 years ago, went in the am, saw the exercisers, got a huge thing of carrot juice, and walked around. This time, everything is closed up, and there are bums and weirdo hippies everywhere. Lots of people who look and act like drugs have fried their brains.

I'm a big, athletic guy, and short of armed robbery, nobody is going to bother me. However, walking around was just plain uncomfortable. Oh yeah, and there are marajuana smoking dens (businesses) everywhere.

I did find my juice, but it wasn't instantaneously fresh... Good though and store made from a place called something "farms". Unfortunately that was populated by bums and Mexicans. Coming in wearing standard office clothes, that was uncomfortable too.

So has Venice beach really gone down the tubes or been overrun? I don't remember it this way all that long ago. I'll just stick to Manhattan and Hermosa from now on I guess...

Venice Beach used to be completely ghetto before people realized that any beach property in Southern Cal was very valuable. Sometime around the late '60s or '70s was when it went upscale.

Too bad it's going back. Will the last taxpayer leaving California please turn out the lights?

Thats how Miami Beach is.

Its full of bums, thugs and people up to no good. Its OK in the day time but at night its really not worth going there to hang out. 20 years ago it was nice, but people buy into all that South Beach hype they see on TV and are very disappointed when they visit.

Go Jersey Shore! You get some odd folks, but based upon what I'm seeing and hearing, it sounds 10000x better.

Also probably more likely to get incontact with nasty pollution and/or needles at Venice beach..

I had the same feeling the last time I was in New Jersey.

Ehhhh, maybe some places, but nj isn't a bad place to live.... But neither are lots of places in CA. Venice was just... Striking.

OK, correct me.

LOTS of people with their life in their cart and/or backpack, unwashed/stained and ripped clothes. What term is better and more PC? "domecile challenged"?

And, to the best of my knowledge, the bulk of the "work" group/class that is coming into CA is Mexican in Origin. Care to refute? Care to correct? Go ahead. Frankly, "Latin American" is a ridiculous term, as more then likely the bulk of the population coming in (Hispanic) retains their citizenship. Want "Mexican American"? Well, prove to me that the bulk of them have applied for citizenship.

So, please enlighten me as to where I went wrong. Im really curious. Last I checked, I was just standing there, and my comments are directly accurate. Oh, and by the way, one of the locals that talked to me (with the ripped clothes and apparent burned-out brain called himself and the other people around "hippies", so that's accurate too, by their own admission).

It's not a matter of being compassionate. It is a matter of a significant change/shift in demographics of a population in a place I visited, AND, more importantly, a complete breakdown and close-up of a huge number of businesses that used to be there.

I'm free to make an observation of what I construe to be a significant change in a place that I visited once before.

Forget it - Venice Beach, CA is business as usual. It is a family vacation location, and everyone should visit. Nothing wrong here...
