I have a 05 Honda Civic SI and I am considering Valvoline Synpower 5w-20. Does anyone have any experience with this oil? I have not seen any UOA or VOA listed.

I would suggest Amsoil or Red Line 5W-20. I think they're the best in that weight. When you use such a thin oil during your warranty coverage, buy the best for hot Florida. After the warranty expires, switch to 10W-30 & use the less expensive brands like Pennzoil, Valvoline, Castrol, Mobil-1... etc ... that you find on sale.

Do Amsoil and Redline meet Honda specs for warranty? Amsoil says " They are recommended for all domestic and foreign vehicles requiring any of the listed performance specifications."

I guess there are Honda specific requirements that must be met before Honda can be put on a label.

I dunno! I buy GMs and Chryslers. All I do know are all the bragging rights Amsoil & Red Line have with 5W-20 shoppers. Too much money per quart to suit me anyways. I'll stick with the basic, always advertised, easy to find brand synthetics at auto shops or Wally World near me. Lately, I've been hooked on a mixologist-blend of Mobil-1.

Theoretically, Honda's specs are an 5W-20 API SL/SM donut. I'm not saying Amsoil (not XL) or Red Line are substandard, but the manufacturer could conceivably give the owner a hard time for using an unlicensed product. I'm not saying it's right, but dealers have been known to be A-holes about certain warranty "requirements".

meeze,

I have always liked Castrol & Valvoline but like yourself could not find enough supporting info for the Valvoline in it's 5w-20 weight.

Do not forget to consider Motorcraft and their 5w-20 blend which does carry the API service approval you need for your Honda.
This is the oil I am running in my new Odyssey.

You should be able to find plenty of info on this fine board about the Motorcraft to help you decide if you feel it will work for you.

I believe Honda does have a spec, but their manual likely states a SAE 5W-20 oil with the API SL/SM donut and GF-3/GF-4 "Starburst". Honda has never been specific about brands other than recommending their own labelled fluids. In the US, Honda motor oil is made by ExxonMobil.
