It's about time for an oil change, I was going to go with VRP to test out the supposed cleaning properties but just saw NAPA has RP on sale for $37 + $15 rebate for 5qt... $22 isn't bad for the "premium" oil. For comparison, the VRP is $30 for 5qt. What would y'all do?

This is for a 160k mi 2AR-FE rav4 with 5k mi oci, last oil change was M1 0w-30 ESP. Probably thinking of going for 5w-20 with either VRP or RP.

Should I go VRP or RP?

I have been using Castrol GTX High Mileage in my Tacoma X-Runner for a few years. Oil consumption is zero and the "weep" at the timing cover is gone!! I change it every 3000 miles as it has 139,600 on it.

Restore and protect just because

Aren't those oil in different categories?
I thought people buy VRP for it's "cleaning" capabilities.
Good sale price though. If it wasn't purple, I would buy some but over the years, I have got used to normal oil colors. :alien:

The Royal Purple API rated oil doesn't have their "Synerlec" technology built in. I think Royal Purple makes an oil for High milage engines that has the "Synerlec". If it has Synerlec, it is written on the bottle. Anyhow, Royal Purples best oil is called HPS. It has Synerlec but is not API rated. If price is the main factor, go with the VRP, it is great oil and seems to do what it says, IMO.

Royal purple off the shelf stuff is meh. It’s just purple which some go crazy for. I’ve seen the U/VOAs and they’re nothing special. RO HPS? Well maybe there something there.

But VRP > RP in the case you’ve stated here.

To get the "better than other products" Royal Purple engine oils, you have to order their HPS product which is not API rated. It has to have what they call "Synerlec". It is shown on the bottle, whether it is engine oil, racing oil, or gear oils. They have no API rated engine oils that contain their "Synerlec" additive.
