Daughters vehicle in the title started using oil at a 1qt/thousand miles in the last year. That engine is not under recall from Hyundai however it's a known issue with the oil control rings on many of the cars from that era. 70,000 on the engine when it started to use copious amounts of oil.
She's getting her master's 1200 miles from home so I don't have a chance to do things on her car regularly. Had the chance to fly and see her and drive her car back east to see my folks in the last week.
Did a change with Valvoline R&P 5W-30 before I left with just over 74,000 miles on the odometer, used a quart in the 700 miles getting to where I was going. GDI cleaning with CRC turbo and intake valve cleaner, a bottle of Techron at every fill up (ran the tank down before each fill up) after the initial 700 miles. Topped it off with a quart after the first 700 mile run. Then did a 250 mile run to Philadelphia and back. Still used a third of a quart. Topped it off, left Pennsylvania and ended up back in Chicago today, almost 700 additional miles and no noticeable consumption.
With the oil issue appearing in the last year, it hadn't been driven a whole lot and I think that led to less carbon build up on the rings and thus a relatively quick fix with the R&P in about 1700 miles total.
My 2010 Acura TL SH AWD (known issue with that engine and build up on the rings) with 215,000 miles on the odometer is on its third change with R&P. I'm just now starting to notice an improvement but not to where hope it will end up.
Anyway, I'm resting easy that she doesn't need to be adding oil, at least this point, moving forward.
