Valvoline R&P test ... 1k on oil burning crv

I also recently did an oil change to Valvoline R&P in my wife's Outback, which is also uses oil, at a rate of about 1 qt./3k miles. I am curious to see if it will help with the oil consumption. Not enough miles on the R&P to tell anything yet. The Outback doesn't normally get driven a lot, so it may take a while to put the 3k on it, that Valvoline recommends, for oci with R&P.

It will be interesting to compare experiences.

I wasn’t aware of the 3,000 mile OCI recommendation for the R&P from Valvoline. I have 3,500 miles on my current R&P oil and was planning on going 5,000 miles before my next oil change. The current fill is a medium amber color and still looks good, if that means anything. I’m now wondering if I should go ahead and change it at 3,500 miles. I have the R&P and filters on the shelf so no biggie if so.

I wish Valvoline was a bit more specific with their oci recommendation when using this oil for the first time. In my case the manufacturer recommended oci on my Civic is to follow the oil life monitor and in my driving that works out to roughly 10k intervals. I don’t think that a 10k run is a good idea for the very first run with this oil though 😳 My plan is to do a 6k interval for the first run and then maybe 8k for the second run and then back to 10k for the third run.

Some engines are dirtier than others. Some have engines that show the dipstick oil black in a couple hundred miles after the oil change. Then there's exceptions like GMan's ride.

Everyone using this new product needs to evaluate the condition of their used oil...... and react accordingly. The older the vehicle and lengthier the OCI, the better the odds that you will need your next oil change done sooner with Valvoline R&P.

Aren’t intervals, to the extent that they are followed, more from the manufacturer than the oil company?

The 3k mile recommendation comes from these two Valvoline guys, in this Motor Oil Geek video. They note that the filter is pretty dirty after only 3k miles, so they recommend running the oil and filter for only 3k miles.

But wouldn't it seem, that by the third R&P oil change, that it could be ran longer?

I went back and watched the video again, and could not find where they talked about a 3k oil change. But starting at about 14:30, they talk about potentially overwhelming the filter. It may have been here on BITOG, in discussing this video, that others suggested that perhaps a 3k oci was wise with R&P.

But perhaps just a filter change at about 3k - 4k miles, may be the thing to do.

If anyone wants to send me a jug or two, I'll run it for 10k miles straight! I'll even let the group decide on the filter. See my sig for engines available during testing.
Since everyone isn't a fanboy of every brand it would help to list the make and model of what your engines are attached to. (y)

Has anyone seen anything positive from this magical oil yet?

For best results, Valvoline recommends using Restore & Protect consistently as directed by the vehicle's manufacturer. According to Valvoline, using Restore & Protect for four or more consecutive oil changes at standard maintenance intervals.
This. No where has Valvoline claimed that the cleaning is so significant that you need to do something different. They have just about stated the opposite that it is meant to be a slow cleaning so as not to introduce problems.

I could see doing a 3K oil change if you're running this in a dirty engine. Or, just swap the oil filter. Cut open oil filter and see whats in it.

Like others have said, this is supposed to do a slow cleaning. 4 OEM perscribed OCI's.

How would that be possible without a UOA? I get it, I'm guilty as well. I observed a darker and dirtier dipstick oil when I ran HPL for about 6k and changed it before I hit my 3.6's usual 7500OCI. BUT that was on feelings and my bias expectation of some cleaning going on despite the assumption my engine is pretty clean.
