2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser 4.0L 1GRFE gasoline v6 w/237k miles. I've owned it since Jan 2009. It's never consumed any oil and it didn't this time either. Still on the full mark when I drained it.

out and off = 6.5 qts Valvoline R&P 5w-30, Purolator Boss PBL30001 full flow filter, and Amsoil EaBP90 bypass filter.

in and on = 6.5 more qts of VR&P, and new EaBP90 bypass filter, and a new Fleetguard LF3487 full flow filter. This is my forever oil for this vehicle, and I'll stick to 5k oci.

Sample#1 - Dec 2010 = Amsoil SS 0w30 - oci 17,000 miles
Sample#2 - Dec 2011 = Amsoil SS 0w30 - oci 18,700 miles
Sample#3 - Aug 2012 = Amsoil AMO 10w40 - oci 12,200 miles
Sample#4 - May 2013 = Amsoil AMO 10w40 - oci14,000 miles
Sample#5 - Mar 2014 = Amsoil AMO 10w40 - oci 15,000 miles
Sample#6 - Nov 2014 = Amsoil ACD 10w30 - oci 14,200 miles
Sample#7 - Jul 2015 = ST 5w30 - oci 10,100 miles
Sample#8 - Apr 2016 = Mobil1 5w30 - oci 11,000 miles
Sample#9 - Aug 2017 = Mobil1 5w30 - oci 13,000 miles
Sample#10 - Oct 2018 = Mobil1 5w30 - oci 14,500 miles
Sample#11 - Sep 2019 = Delvac1 ESP 5w40 - oci 11,000 miles
Sample#12 - Oct 2020 = Delvac1 ESP 5w30 - oci 11,100 miles
Sample#13 - Jan 2022 = Delvac1 ESP 5w30 - oci 10,000 miles
Sample#14 - Mar 2023 = Mobil1 5w20 - oci 6900 miles
Sample#15 – Sept 2024 = ST 5w30 & VPB ”Restore” 10w30 – oci 6000 miles
Sample#16 - June 2025 = Valvoline Restore & Protect 5w30 - oci 5000 miles

I'll post pics of both filters cut open soon and post in the appropriate areas,
and
I'll post pics of under the valve cover that I've taken 3 times over the yrs.
also,
I'll post pics soon of the inside the engine with the lower oil pan off.
There is a little cleaning going on but nothing aggressive.

I am not familiar with this engine, but you have a lot of varnish and build up for the pricy oils you used, makes me think that they were not worth their additional cost.

It might have been better to run shorter OCIs with budget friendly Full Synthetics.

Thanks for posting. My truck has the same engine and I was considering giving Valvoline R&P a try but was concerned about it shearing down. I see the viscosity stayed over 10 for your 5k OCI. That's good! I feel much better 😊 Thanks again

The 1GRFE is super easy on oil, look at ALL of my reports.
If that’s the case.

Then your OCI were too long, you have too much buildup and varnish

I have rebuilt many Toyota engines, a lot of them look like yours with conventional motor oil…

2GRFEs are super easy on oil and they look almost new inside, even with 5w30 conventional motor oil.

He has a point. The engine had multiple high mileage oci's (17k, 18.7k, 12.2 k, 14k, 15k, 14.2k for the first 6, and more long ocis after that) and despite the wear numbers oil still ages while protecting.

Oil is cheap. 5,000 MI oci is good.

always the haters :)
shouldn't have posted the pictures of the inside of the engine, there is a difference between facts vs hating.

Toyota/Lexus VVT-i gears are very sensitive to build up, looking at the build up and varnish in your engine, your VVT-i gear(s) & most likely piston rings lands will have some sort of build up.

Just because you think the engine runs great, doesn't mean it is running at it's cleanest or best.

Literally results speak for themselves, your engine has too much varnish and buildup, very simple. Your engine pictures are the definition of UOA doesn't show the whole story.

This is sad knowing you have owned the vehicle since almost new and you are a BITOG member...

I don’t rack up the miles that many do on here. Over the years many of my vehicles hit the 1 year prior to hitting higher OCI. My Sequoia was about 7500 at the year mark, UOA showed I could do more. I can see the use case and financial investment into better oils in regard to downtime and other factors if warranted for businesses where they need to stay on road.

What bothers me are these pictures using what are often touted here as excellent oils that are supposed to go the distance. Multiple users showing pictures and dealing with oil burning while using what we consider quality synthetics of which many were doing longer OCI’s or at least following MM. Not everyone has that issue but for me just looking at cost of UOA is more than just doing another oil change at ½ that interval.

Everyone has their own preferences and doing what they feel is best or trying to push the envelope for their own reasons. I did my UOA’s for concern over my use with much shorter times. The UOA’s above show it was still good oil for doing the job as designed but leaving that much varnish and carbon bothers me. That is not even at the pistons/rings that many have issues with.

I'm not hating at OP or his choices. I'm not hating but definitely not liking the results that were left. Maybe all that happened during the first 36k from previous owner prior to when @jetman got it.

I was emailing back and forth with HPL about oil for the Honda Pilot we recently bought. Based on the anecdotal data he found while researching the J35Y8 engine, his recommendation was not trying to extend OCIs too long: "Most were recommending more frequent oil changes than the 10K Honda is suggesting."

I believe some oils are better than others, and some are superior to others, but there's only so much an oil can do.

I ordered multiple cases of HPL's PPPCMO. Any company who takes the time to answer my "stupid questions" has my support.

Default “safe” position is shown time and time again on BITOG that moderate OCI is best in more cases than any other scheme. Extendo-drain works great sometimes for some engines under some conditions. Not all. Not even close to all. If you want to have margin and not think too much, keep moderate OCI.

It will take 3-4 5k OCIs of VR&P to work on the varnish and other deposits in the engine. That said, it may be a candidate engine where the oil filter is changed-out in the middle of the OCI and checked for build-up from the internals washing-out.
